Hey everyone, I'm looking for the best text editor to do my web programming in, any recommendations? All I am really looking for is color coded text, find/replace functions, line numbers, and that's pretty much it I think, anything else that could help would be nice... Anyone have a program they just love for this? Thanks! :D

I personally dont like it, but Im sure the emacs OS can do what you want. Some people say it has a nice text editor.

lol... yeah I am already using notepad.. but it does not have two key feauters that I want, line numbers and color coding... hehe

On the other hand, the code editor of something like Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 is a lot like what I'm looking for possibly, but I just don't really need all the extra garbage, and I don't like how UD handles stuff sometimes (like when you do a save as on a file outside of the folder you are in, it replaces all of your links/images/etc. with file:///C:/blah blah blah )

anyone else? also, n0cmonkey, where can you find this "emacs OS" and what don't you like about it?

I guess you havent heard of it. :p

Its not really an OS, its a joke because emacs can do ANYTHING. I saw a nice aol IM client through this "text editor". Anyhow, here is one place to check it out: Bewm. I bet there is a windows port somewhere...

Notepad for most hardcore html/whatever coders. But, for people who like a bit more power and options, there is a great program called EditPlus. It's easy to find, just do a search. I believe it's at version 2.0. You can download a trial or something. You can pay for the 'full' version or crack it, up to you. Personally I stick to Notepad.

editplus looks like what I was after, thanks :)

and to all of you hardcore junkies out there who are advocating notepad, sure it's a decent program, but if you don't have time to go searching through many kb's of code, the color coding becomes a VERY nice feature, and for things like JavaScript, ASP, PHP, I KNOW that the line numbers help out a lot... AND, EditPlus has features where it find/replaces stuff in multiple files of whatever type in a directory... this stuff is for high-development where you need the features to save you time... sure notepad does great, but it definitely isn't the best, other features out there really do help

:D
