I snipe because it works well against those people who can't decide how much they are willing to pay for an item. When I see something I'm interested in, I'll take some time to research it and come up with the max amount I'm willing to pay, then set a snipe for 5 seconds from the end of the auction. I'll usually pick an even dollar amount + .04 or something, to beat others who would bid the same even dollar amount as me. As others have said, I could put my max bid in right when the auction started, but then it would just get eaten away by people who can't decide how much they are willing to pay, and get into bidding wars.

I always snipe. But, I do it manually. I'll wait until the last 5 seconds, and put in my maximum bid of an even amount, plus a few pence (so those who put in x.00 will get outbid by me ;)).

Only ever lost one thing with this method.
