I have WinfastPVR.. it works fine with my Winfast TV tuner except the file sizes are extremely large and I'd like to get them smaller. I'd also like a free program with more features on it. Any recommendations?

I bet this question would get the best answers if it was posted in the correct forum.

I thought if you used MCE, you had to still use a 3rd party PVR program.

Nope - MCE is just XP with the Microsoft PVR program.

If by PVR you mean an application that allows for scheduling and a program guide, I don't think there are many viable free choices besides GB-PVR.

GB-PVR is pretty good with the Hauppauge cards. I bought BeyondTV and it's worth the money, though. It's generally more stable, although GB-PVR really only gave me issues with my HD card.
