Path of Exile is a free fantasy-based D2 clone.

If you are strict, then it may be too 'mature' for a 14 year old, but I think hed be fine.

On a more personal note....When my parents were going through some crap in their marriage, i (an avid gamer) really enjoyed when we would play games together as a family, even if they were competitive or not. My mom, who never plays games, even played, and had fun.

So, basically what i am saying, i'd advise you to spend time with your kid, no matter the game you guys are playing. It doesn't have to be a military shooter for a kid to have fun with their parents/siblings. Just be involved in their lives.

I won't tell you what games to play with them, but whichever you do, just spend time, and i think it will work out for the best. I miss playing games with my parents.

First thing that came to mind is the original free Cave Story. Of course, the ones that you buy have more features and additional music enhancements and game play modes. I know I enjoyed Donkey Kong Country back then at around that age and this fits the bill.

I can only think of one free one (besides those excellent flash-based puzzle games you see from time to time):

FTL (cheap)
Minecraft ($27, but awesome)
SimCity 4 (cheap)
Universe Sandbox (cheap educational software if he's into astronomy)
FreeCiv
Portal (cheap)
Trials Evolution Gold ($20 modern Excitebike)
