Best Free FTP program?

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering about the best free FTP program. I want something easy to use in order to update my website.

Thank you for the help!

What operating system? I think GuildFTP is generally the best regarded free soltion for windows ("think" being the key word there 😉). IIS (if you have xp pro) also includes an ftp server. On linux you have a zillion options, some of which were probably distributed with the os itself.

You want something easy to use to update your website that is hosted elsewhere. You have WinXP.

Start> My Network Places> Add a network place> choose another network location...
type in the address of your website's FTP server, put in your username and password and tell it to remember them. Voila! Your website is now a folder on your computer.

Hmmm 😕 Looks like more than one thing about the OP went right over my head. Sorry 😛

wow! thank you guys!

Now for the "dumb question." Is my ftp server the cPanel address?

Also, in NETWORK CONNECTIONS, I don't seem to have the options that you say. I have CREATE A NEW CONNECTION, which leads me to:
- Connect to the internet
- Connect to the network at my workplace
- Set up a home or small office network
- set up an advanced connection

My Network Connections has definitely changed, since I used to know how to do what you're talking about. I don't anymore.

Iny My Network Places, on the left side is a button called 'Add a Network Place'. That will bring up the wizard you need 🙂

No problem, go to plan B.

Using good old Internet Explorer, in the address box, try typing in ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com -- should bring up your site. Still in Explorer, in the upper right, click on file, then login as.... -- should bring up a login screen, use the same username/password as you do to get to the cPanel.

GuildFTP use to be my choice of FTP server freeware.

No I switched to Filezilla. Using both Server and Client. Easy to configure nice interface.

:sun:

And so long as we're discussing clients: I usually use WinSCP for my file transfer needs (or plain sftp in linux). If I must use ftp I generally resort to the command line client.
