Best free back-up software?

I have a friend who has had bad luck with his laptop....

What is the best back up software to use?

What would be the best back up route to go?

Is there something that can sync important folders or files to his external drive?

Or would it be best to backup the whole drive? Every so often?

He has a MyBook but the built in software and back up messed up and he lost his back up....

I use ClickFree, a digital external hard drive, manual, or auto modes. Around $150 for the 300 GIGABYTE model. Can almost fit in a shirt pocket.

He already has a Western Digital MyBook. The built in back up software got corrupted and his backup was lost. So that software wasn't very good....

Thanks to MechBgon's site..........SyncToy is what I was looking for..........For backing up the whole drive, would Windows built in back-up software be good?

syncback is nice option too for windows, and for linux rsync. You can also setup a linux server and have it map the c$ then use rsync that way so that way it's centralized if you have multiple PCs. Setup a raid 5 with 3 1TB drives and it will be plenty of space.
