Best foreign movies?

Which movies would you guys suggest if one is interested in viewing some foreign movies. I'll throw out a few I particularly liked.

Ong Bak: Thai Warrior
Tae Guk Gi (awesome war movie!!!)
City of God

I'm looking for some lesson common ones. In the U.S we come out with a ton of entertaining movies. There have to be so many more internationally that we just don't know of, right?

Let's hear some of the lesser known gems out there.

Care to give a brief description of what they are about?

Would you care to do the same with your movies?

And to pitch in, I'm sure many have heard of it but whatever.
Seven Samurai; A Japanese village recruits poor and hungry samurai to help defend their village from bandits. It's black and white and long, I think around 3 hours.

HK: The Heroic Trio, Time and Tide, John Woo's HK films, especially The Killer, Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow 1-2
Germany: Wings of Desire, Das Boot, Run Lola Run, and if you like it then The Princess and the Warrior
France/Poland: Kieslowski's Three Colors: Blue, White (Blanc), Red (Rouge)
France: The Crimson Rivers, Amelie, Avenue Montaigne, Empire of the Wolves
China: Raise the Red Lantern
Japan: Tampopo, Ran, Samurai trilogy (Mifune), Yojimbo, Zatoichi (original version), Lone Wolf & Cub, The Eel, Twilight Samurai, Chushingura - Hana no maki yuki no maki (1962)
Taiwan: Eat Drink Man Woman
South Korea: The Host
New Zealand: Whale Rider

Amelie - French romantic comedy (not like American romantic comedies)
Rabbit-Proof Fence - Australian movie about some aborigine kids who are forcibly separated from their mother but escape and try to find their way home (while eluding capture)

Waterboys - Some highschool dudes try to start a synchronized swimming club; sounds gay, but it's a fun watch.

The Host - Suspense/political satire. A toxic leak turns a fish into a monster which terrorizes the local area.

Amelie - I really don't know how to describe this movie other than that it's awesome. Watch this if you like Pushing Daisies, The Fall, Big Fish.

Internal Affairs - Where The Departed jacked the story from.

Versus - A low budget, very stylized action movie. Oh yea, it has zombies.

My Sassy Girl - A romantic comedy. Make sure it's the Korean version.

3 Iron - A romance drama. A guy likes breaking into people's house and taking pictures of himself there. In one of them he see's a wife being abused by her husband and decided to free her. This has very little dialogue and is a VERY good movie.

Tampopo - A trucker teaches a small restaurant owner how to make noodles. It has side stories that ranges from making you cry to make you lmao.

Men Suddenly in Black - Dark comedy where some husbands make plans on how to cheat on their wives.

Monsoon Wedding
Amelie
Delicatessen

Only foreign movies Ive ever seen are; Das Boot, City of God and all the movies by the guy who did Spirited Away, Cat Returns, ect. I liked them all, especially Das Boot.

I don't know where to start, so I'll just start with my favorite film of all time:

8 1/2

anything from Fellini. Check out La Strada, too. I'm partial to Italian film, so Rossellini, De Sica, Pasolini, etc...

I like a lot of Almodovar's work for more contemporary stuff. OP will probably like those crazy insane Korean films--Oldboy was a great rec.

Probably my favorite to come out of Europe in the last couple of years:

The Lives of Others. next to There Will be Blood, I feel it was the best film released that year.

Amelie was a good rec, too. fantastic little flick. If you're too lame to deal with a romantic comedy, then consider that anything with Tatou is pretty easy to watch. 😉

saying that, maybe Dirty Pretty Things is up your alley? (Organ theft!!!)

District 13 / Banlieue 13 / District B13
French film which is awesome.

Taxi
Comedy/action, get the French version and pretend the US remake doesn't exist.

Jin-Roh (The Wolf Brigade)
Japanese anime (not kiddy) about an alternative post WW2 future.

Good point, sure.

City of God - Action/Suspense/True Story that takes place in Rio
Tae Guk Gi - Korean civil war movie. Reminds me of Saving Private Ryan but way better.
Ong Bak: Thai Warrior - This is basically a fighting movie with a horrible story. The fighting is awesome though. Think of the old Jackie Chan movies like "Rumble in the Bronx" only step it up a notch.

Night Watch - Russian movie based on the book by Sergei Lukyanenko
Day Watch - Russian movie based on the book by Sergei Lukyanenko

Farewell My Concubine
M
Delicatessen
City of Lost Children
8 and 1/2
La Strada
La Dolce Vida
The 400 Blows
The Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
More
Tales of the Brothers Quay
Panther Panchali
The World of Apu
Europa Europa!
The Vanishing
Diabolique
Bad Education
Amores Perros
Romeo and Juliet
Landscape in the Mist

Kung-Fu Hustle
Pan's Labyrinth
City of Lost Children

The Host (only first 10 minutes):
(in a lab with many dusty chemical bottles)
Doctor: "This stuffs gone bad, get rid of it."
RA: "Yes sir, how will we dispose of it?"
Doctor: "Pour it down the drain"
RA: "That goes directly into the river"
Doctor: "I don't give a shit"

Thus the mutated monster is born.
