pan's labyrinth is probably the best film made this year.

also, the curse of the golden flower is another great foreign language film out now.

pan's will almost certainly be nominated for a best film oscar and the other should receive a nomination for best foreign film picture.

Lots of excellent movies mentioned here. I watched Tsotsi recently (South African film) and thought it was pretty good. It has a simple story, but is presented powerfully. The kid who plays "Tsotsi" was a great fit for the role

Tae Guk Gi (The Brotherhood of War) is a fantastic Korean war film.

I almost rented that the other day, i'll go back and get it

You buy the two disc region 1 DVD for like $9 shipped, from DeepDiscount I believe.

I think the movie is french...I have only seen clips of it. One scene is a dude with I think a bo-staff and he beats up like 6 dudes, pretty cool fight scene. I think the main plot of the movie is about some werewolf type creature that kidnaps girls and two brothers trying to kill it. Thats all I remeber, if anyone can tell me the name that would be great.

Sounds like Brotherhood of the Wolf, which I didn't think was particularly good.

I recently saw a really good German film titled The Lives of Others. It's about the Stasi in East Germany in the early 80s. If it's showing at a theater near you, it's definitely worth checking out.

I saw it at double feature (Iwojima and The Lives of Others) in Santa Monica. Clint Eastwood was supposed to be there, but he canceled. The director and lead actor of the German movie were there though.

Ichi the Killer is my personal favorite. I realize it may not be a masterpiece in everyone's eyes, but it is one of my top 3 movies. (Josey Wales being my first favorite, and Requiem For a Dream being my second favorite)

That being said ... there are a LOT of awesome foreign movies.
I am only listing some personal favorites. Unfortunately, there are still a LOT of movies on my "want to watch" list that I haven't watched or tracked down yet.

... Canada ...

... Germany ...

Nosferatu

... Ireland ...

... Japan ...

28 Days Later

Then you have movies like... A Clockwork Orange & Alien where "most" of the movie is foreign, but parts are American ..

Any credit by Fellini, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Polanski or Arcand on a movie is pretty much a seal of quality (although I will admit there are some rare exceptions)... let's not forget Truffaut and Jodorowsky, while we're at it!

Battle Royale
Brotherhood of the Wolf
House of Flying Daggers
The Protector (haha, not really but it had sweet martial arts)

Blow Up
The Bicycle Thief (seconded)
Closely Watched Trains
Rashomon
Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Rache
Un Chien Andalou
