North Dallas Forty and the original The Longest Yard are good ones as well.
Yeah I'd say North Dallas Forty if you're talking about the NFL. Just a good solid real pro football movie.
Paper Lion was ok as well, better than any of the recent ones people are mentioning I think. Personally I'd rank Necessary Roughness above most football movies that came out after it. Yeah its not really good and terribly cheesy but its better than the melodramatic overacted shit like Any Given Sunday, and its more real than The Replacements.
Best of Times isn't a good football movie, its more about the high school glory and failed opportunity. Its not great, but its not bad and its got Kurt Russell (and Robin Williams).
I haven't watched Brian's Song but I saw someone mention it. Has the makings to be good so I'll have to check it out. Hmm they remade it too.
I saw someone mention The Program. I liked it and think its probably the best about the big time college situation (that isn't a documentary). I wouldn't call it like a must watch though.
Friday Night Lights is probably the best of the big time Texas high school football type movies but I didn't really like it.
I don't know, I don't think there are any really great football movies. There's some good ones (and some good ones that aren't really football movies but use it as a main element), and there's a bunch of documentaries and stuff (ESPN's 30 for 30 has some ones that are interesting), but there aren't any ones that really take it to the next level. I'm surprised we're not seeing more about former NFL players.
So for me
Pro: North Dallas Forty
College: The Program
High School: Friday Night Lights
