Hey all...

For those that don't know, I'm a production artist at a printing company and I'm installing a dozen or so fonts to my machine everyday. I clear my fonts folder about once a month and just put the defaults back in, but it proves to be a waste of time as I end up putting a lot of them back. Typically, I've just plopped them into the user font folder and restarted Illustrator/Photoshop/etc and been done with it. Many customers just send all the variations of the fonts they use along and I just put them all in the folder and overwrite mine because there ARE sometimes slight variations in fonts.

This is a total pain in the ass and it seems like having 1000+ fonts just in the user folder is a really, really bad idea.

So I really want to explore some font management software but don't have the foggiest idea where to start.

What are some good ones and what is the basic rundown of using them? Will they still require me to restart my apps when I load fonts? Are there are good free ones? I mean, since it's for work my options are pay for it out of pocket and convince the company to reimburse me and adopt the program... find a free app... or suffer and ignore it all.

I have been using Extensis Suitcase for a long time and love it. It's not free but it's one of hte best out there for mac. Suitcase Fusion is the newest. Easy to use, you can sent the font activation to off, perm or until the next restart. It doesn't require you to restart apps after you turn fonts on and off (at least for the Adobe suite).

I can't stand Extensis, and I've used Linotype's FontExplorer and have found it to be great. It's works great, does what I need it to do, isn't a resource hog, and best of all it's FREE. I would check it out.
