Are they willing to go out and demo some stuff? You could get 100 different recommendations, but getting something that they like is the important thing.

So they have a stereo receiver already?

Besides Paradigm, B&W, etc. that they can demo easily, there should also be some other kinds that would be easy to find and demo. Klipsch, Boston, JBL, Polk, etc.

If they're willing to go used/refurbished, you can get some pretty good deals too.

Just an example something that costs $550-ish at BB http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp...ctCategoryId=cat03044&id=1061127108885
can be had for half as much factory refurbished.

LOL, yeah, thats me...but that was my money, this is for my parents, and they tend to be pretty conservative with how they spend.

I love my B & W. Maybe then should look at a lower model in the line like the 6 series.

Anywhere near CT?

This place is across the street from Yale in New Haven. Lot of big time classical musicians get their stuff from these guys.

They're pretty much the experts, and have stuff I've never heard of. My father used to work there years ago, and I used to go down when I was a kid. At the time they had a "special" room with all the high end stuff - there was a "speaker system" that cost 50K.

But, they have more affordable stuff as well heh,heh...

I could tell you what good speakers were 10 years ago, but I've pretty much lost touch since then. One thing I know though - Bose haven't got any better.

mirage makes some nice speakers, but im not sure if they are exactly in the price range given, but i think they might be worth looking into. also, like an early poster said, def tech is a good brand of speakers to consider.

as for athena, i cant say from experience, but from what ive heard/read from others, they are pretty good speakers.

Thanks for the info. I'll see what my dad says about driving there.

Sure you can find some "Flava o' the DAyy", but I stand by my recommendation. Get what is used in the monitoring of the creation of the recordings.
That's Tannoy, B&K, JBL, Meyers, among a select few.
Tannoy

Don't forget that the BBC now uses Dynaudio for inhouse monitors ;)
I think that Dynes are the best. But they cost an arm & leg and require a clean high current power source to get the best out of them. My favorite is the Confidence C1 but they cost over $6,000 a pair and nead at least NAD, Rotel, Parasound for power.
