Best floor speakers

My parents are looking for a new set of floor speakers for classical music, as well as some HT use. No 5.1, no sub, just a two channel set, with 75% of use to music (and 99% of that, classical). Trying not to go over around $400-$500 for the set, so cheap is good 🙂. Cmon, Yoyo, help me out 🙂.

def tech speakers are exactly opposite of Bose, jacked up highs and lows. I'd recommend a pr of athena technologies audition f2.2

Looked at some reviews at the Athenas, and they look to be perfect for classical music. Found them for $400 a pair, so right now, this is my favorite option. Thanks 🙂.

I was actually gonna come in here and suggest the Athena floorstanders for $400.

Excellent call.

Why go cheap on the speakers? Aren't you the guy w/ the 30" Cinema Display? B&W Nautilus FTW!

LOL, yeah, thats me...but that was my money, this is for my parents, and they tend to be pretty conservative with how they spend.

Best floor speakers hmmm - the title reminds me of people that actually mounted speakers in the floor using the crawl space beneath as an enclosure. They were wolfers though. 😉

I use my Onkyo HITAB and I love it. 5.1 surround sound. If your parents really love classical music, they should try a classical DVD audio disc. You get different music out of each speaker. Its like being in the pit!

Consider the Onkyo CSV720. I got it for my sons Christmas present.

Better than the Wave radio and Tivoli. It?s XM ready and will play DVD-A as well as SACD reference discs. Sounds pretty good to my ears, especially at this price point.

We're talking about a HT enviornment, not quite what I'm looking for, but thanks.

Consider Paradigm speakers. Great value for the money. Once you get more money, you can upgrade. Most dealers will buy back the first speakers for what you paid for them when you apply it to a better pair.

I was actually looking at the Espirit v.3, but after reading a couple of user review, they apparently don't handle classical as well as the Athenas do.

i have a set of polk's and they sound very nice... bookshelf speakers, with 2x6 1x4 and a tweet each... also have a polk powered sub

Did you look at the Monitor series? I don't know the prices, but I would think the Monitor 3s would fit your budget. Monitor 7s retail at $750 for the pair.

Hm...that's a bit much for the 7's. I'll take a look at the 3's, though, thanks.

Monitor 3 I think this is regular price.

By the way, I would listen to the speakers you buy, before you buy them. Reviews are fine, but your ear is the best way to tell what you like.

Good luck.

if you dont mind driving a bit to boston, there is a "tiny stereo place" there that has a demo pair of paradigm monitor 7 in black ash color for $599 + 5% tax. version 4, not sure if thats the latest version.

Most classical music will sound the best on speakers that are not "sonically hyped" .
Tannoy's have , for decades, been a staple of most modern recording studios.
I find their coaxial speaker to be excellent in maintaining a faithful replication of the original program material.
Sure you can find some "Flava o' the DAyy", but I stand by my recommendation. Get what is used in the monitoring of the creation of the recordings.
That's Tannoy, B&K, JBL, Meyers, among a select few.

Tannoy

Hmm...a bit over my price range, plus the drive to Boston, which would probably set a good $100).

Don't forget that the BBC now uses Dynaudio for inhouse monitors 😉
