Ok, i'm helping a friend put together a computer and we need some advice on monitors.
He would like a 19" flatscreen (doesn't care about tube: ag/sm)
He wants it to be less than $500 CAD, or less than $325 US for the ppl south of the 49th.
Keep in mind that we are limited to basically samsung, viewsonic, lg, sony, kds.
Thanks for reading
Looking forward to some good advice

I have used the Samsung Syncmaster 19" CRT as well as the 19" Sony trinitron. Both are excellent but for some reason i tended more towards the Samsung, check it out should be around $250 on pricewatch.com

later...

Best bang for the buck will push you toward the Diamondtron CRTs... look at the NECs or Samsung monitors using NEC/Mitsubishi's technology.

I have the NEC MultiSync FE771SB Diamondtron 17" Flat CRT and its SWEET! I'd suspect that the 19" model of this line (i think its FE991SB) would also be nice.

I love my Samsung SyncMaster 900IFT but I am not sure what the current replacement model of it is... fantastic monitor. 😀

It all depends on what kind of refresh rate he wants at which resolution. Anything between .20-.25 dot pitch is unnoticable unless you really stare hard at it. And then it's pretty hard. If he really doesn't care about the refresh rate or keeps his resolution under 1280x1024, then the cheap Samsung 955DF will do the job perfectly. However, if he wants better refresh rates at higher resolutions, then the Samsung 900IFT, Samsung 900NF, or anything with a Trinitron tube will be hard to beat. However, that will come close to the max of your price if you include shipping.

SONY G420S of course!!!
It was sold on DELL HOME a few days ago for only $317 and free shipping!
Another recommendation is DELL P992, It's made by SONY, it's cheaper than SONY, and it has a better warranty than any other brand.

Samsung Dynaflat..or whatever they call it right now... is the best without getting those 2 lines like that of the trinitron..

i have been using mine like for 3 years and its just great..

This review at Tom's Hardware Guide has 12 different 19" CRT monitors that are compared. The prices at the end are higher than they are now. Several of those are probably within $325 on Pricewatch.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Samsungs seem pretty popular in here

what do you guys think of the viewsonics?
ie. p95f+

And how would you rank it compared to a 900nf?

Look for a Hitachi 21" ie CM823F. It's a great looking monitor with aperture grill technology. Maybe not as bright as a Sony Trinitron but still a fabulous monitor. The terrific kicker is that this monitor if you can still find it has a five year parts and labor from Hitachi. I purchased it with my AMEX gold and that tacks on an additional year of warranty.

It's refresh is 85Hz at 1600X1200.

Why doesn't anyone like the CTX-PR096? I might be buying one soon and just wondering as it got lots of top marks on loads of reviews in PC mags... I can't get that samsung monitor overhere, so please no mentioning that to me question 😉
