I have am running W2K as a webserver with IIS. I have installed Zone Alarm Pro 2.6 and it works fine except for one thing:
to access the server log on is required. If I don't log on services are still running in the background and I can here the sound alerts of some services (.exe) executing, such as ADSL autoconnect. This means that I am immediately connected to internet as soon as I turn on the computer, which is great, that's how I like it.
Now I expected Zone Alarm Pro to work in the same fashion as a background service as soon as the computer is turned on, but now I am wondering if it waits for me to log on first before starting up (or some part of it anyhow).
I started worrying about this as it has happened several times, that I turn on the computer and then walk away without having logged on (so there is officially no user on the computer). The computer loads all the background services and I here the sound warning that goes off that it has connected itself to internet (normal).
When I log on, maybe 15 mn later, I find that Zone Alarm alerts are going crazy and nearing 500 after which it stops counting.
Now if I log on straight away, I don't get as many alerts. Actually that is what I have done in this session and I only have 10 alerts for an hour connected.
So I am wondering if some components of Zone Alarm Pro or the whole thing don't work as a service and don't execute in the background upon turning on the computer. Can anyone confirm my theory?
I believe it to be true, as I have found alot of upgoing traffic happening, and unexplainable, especially considering I have restrained applications to using certain ports.
So another question for the experts out there, I hope they are more than just multiple one liners, is which firewall software actually runs as a service and will fully protect my computer as soon as it is turned on, without having to worry about logging on a user.
Thanks
Rob
