The best firewall is a combination of a hardware NAT router (to block incoming) and a software firewall (to block outgoing).
For software, I use AtGuard -- still the best 5 years later.

Love ATGuard, still use it, even though they are long gone.

A friend of mine, who keeps tabs on security updates, virus programs, etc, and sometimes drives me nuts telling me I need to update anything and everything, told me that since they are OOB, and don't have any support anymore, I should use ZA, or another active one. I told him that once you have a firewall, you let out and in what you want, and stop what you don't, it isn't really like a Virus program that needs to be updated.

Good program, let me know if you would like it, and I will dig up the file for it.

I've been using the free version of ZoneAlarm for years on my systems as well as my hardware firewall of my Linksys router. Personally I've always like ZA but I like the added security of a hardware and software solution.

Kerio Personal Firewall

AGREED!!

and Kerio V.4 offers complete control over all applications/services as well, excellent protection tool from deviants that might make it onto your computer and try to run .exe's.

Its Beta but they've been testing it for over a year (previously known as v.3 beta) and is extremely stable on my xp machines.

From what I've heard this dosen't work properly in XP, and can be flaky in 2k as well, I'm using it too under 98 however.

I've had much less trouble running Kerio than Zonealarm on 3 different PC's with W2K. Zonealarm would seriously affect the internet connection if something happened to the OS. Often times just turning off Zonealarm and restarting it would lock up all internet activity. OTOH, I haven't had a problem with Kerio yet.

what makes one software firewall better than another, aside from stability problems associated with zonealarm. with anti-virus, different program catch different/more stuff. is there any reason to think that mcafee firewall would be better than kerio?

me too. I rate Zonealram highly because it's easy to use and does the job most people need.
