final fantasy 3 us (6 jp) wins hands down. 10 was amazingly good for it's story as well. 7 wasn't bad. i think alot of people will play 12 and 3 (the real 3) when they come out.

FF7, then FF6 (Kefka almost boots it out of my top 5).

I haven't finished FF5 yet, FF4 was good but really dated, FF8 was awesome until 1/3 of the way through, FF9 was really good but forgettable for some reason, FFX was really good until nearing the end (I also didn't like Yuna).

The original NES games don't count for me. They're good for what they were, but definitely not the same scale as FF4 and on.

FFIII was my major addiction
I own 2 replica gunblades
I even named my child after Rinoa

FF1 on NES was a great game too, as was FFII

FFIII (US) is still the best (when compared to the capabilities of the system it was on).

For me FF7 or FF2 (US), I stopped playing the series after the sucky FF8 (though it gets points for graphics and much improved sound quality compared to VII, but loses big time b/c of boring story and tedious battles that start from disc 3 or so).

FFVI was really good until after the disaster happens (an earthquake I think). From that point it felt the story was not progressing and you were just doing filler events until the end, which I refused to do, though I later finished the last battle by downloading a savegame from the net and playing it on an emulator.

I wanted to like FF Tactics but it was unnecessarily complicated compared to Shining Force or Fire Emblem, and I only played a little FFV so can't comment on that (or the 8 bit games)

FFVII, no competition.

Very few games can make you feel like the game world really matters, really exists in some way, other than as 1s and 0s. I think it has something to do with the fact that the art and graphics are excellent, but simple, and leave plenty of room for your imagination. There is no attempt to make the characters and environments realistic in any way, so you never say to yourself 'that's crap, it's not real' because you know it's not supposed to be real - it's final fantasy. And there is no voice acting, so there is no bad voice acting, the characters just sound like you think they should in your own mind.

The bit leading up to the death of ***** is a good example - you are amazed by the abandoned 'promised land', but creeped out by it's ominous music, then you are shocked by the appearance of *********, and saddened when the cut scene begins. You really care about the characters, you find yourself thinking, 'damn, ***** is gonna be so cut up by this, what are we gonna do now?... and all this is achieved with a couple of 20-polygon models and a single piano... now that's suspension of disbelief.

Bingo, Yahtzee...when you play VII, you really feel like you are in the game. Even looking back on it now, I can still play it despite the now choppy looking graphics because of the story.

I've only played the US ones, parts 2, 7, and got bored fast of part 8, and never tried any of the ones after that. I played 3 for only a few minutes, but I liked 2 a lot.
