Best/Favorite RTS and why?

In short the reason why Im wondering is cause Im going to teach my younger sister (15, who actually likes computer games) how to play one. Last night I played some Rise of Nations with her over the LAN and it was surprisingly fun. The only problem I have with Rise of Nations is toward the end of the game if you get to the information age it becomes allmost a stale mate with to powerful units and a buncha missles. The other problem I have is during the early ages you cannot build walls (which I loved doing in AoE2)


So my question to you is which game would be the most fun to play over LAN with someone along with a few computers. Take into consideration all the features of the game etc.


Right now I'd have to go with Rise of Nations because it allows for many types of games to be played, along with lotsa customization of those rules, but actual gameplay I think Age of Empires 2 is a bit better. I like the swordsman uber powerful units a bit better then having marines and tanks. How is Age of Mythology though? Its kinda like the sequel to AoE, but at the same time not. I'm not really into the whole worshipping of the Gods and crap, but maybe its actually fun?

i'd start her with warcraft 2 battle.net edition. it's probably the simplest of the rts genre.

my favorites are starcraft:broodwar and command&conquer:generals zero hour.

AoM is okay
its kind of cool to use the god powers and whatnot
im not really into the RTS games as much as the civilization turn based type games.

I have some friends and family that are very much NOT game players. They all picked up Warcraft II extremely easily and it's still very fun to play quick games with.

My favorite is Rise of Nations. It's the only RTS game I've been able to get in to, I don't know why that is.

I'm not worried about her picking it up. She's got the same gene's as me when it comes to gaming. (Im very proud of her) She actually handled her own for a bit in only her second game playing RoN last night. Granted she was never a threat to anyone, but she did survive. She'll get better too. So I'm not looking for something simple.

C&C Generals is a GReAT game, but I'm wondering how lagged it'll be on a wireless lan? Maybe not bad at all, but also its kinda limited. Only 3 races (or whatever you want to call them) and my sister doesn't really seem into the modern warfare type of thing.


I was considering SC:Brood War, you can't go wrong with that game.

i wouldn't worry about c&c generals on the wireless lan. i played it online from a dialup, albeit against only one other player.

Ha, I thought I am the only one that enjoys Aoe2 conqueror. Yeah the few hundreds army war is what the fun lies.

AoE II Conquerers, C&C Generals, Rise of Nations all get quite a bit of play in my house.

I love Rise of Nations.

The single player mode should get her hooked, and provide her with a good foundation on which to start playing. The stalemates really don't happen if you use your units well, and in balance. Everyone knows that missiles alone can't win a battle (unless in this game you have info age vs one without missle defense, which is its major flaw).

Ya I'm definetly thinking I'm going to install Starcraft, and AoE2 with Conq Expansion on both our machines test em both out.


Only question I have about that is will one CD key work over lan on 2 comps?


Also about the C&C series, excluding Generals (the only one I've played) which one is the best?



I guess you can say Im into games where defense is a key, not so much mad rushes to a city in which to raid (thats why I like AoE2) I like building walls at chokepoints and having to siege castles to get through, and having to fight over resources like gold mines in AoE2. Are the old C&C games like this?

In C&C Red Alert you can build walls and sandbags. But it's really different the way you build, you actually queue it up and when it's finished you place it on the map.

As far as the best I liked Red Alert 2 the most. I didn't like the space one at all.. forget the name (Tiberian Sun?)

Second place runner-up would be C&C Generals. It so damn fun with my tank rushes .

I loved TA... the only thing that got old was the AI bug, if you and a friend teamed up aginst 2 AI's sometimes you are your ally would not auto attack an enemy

as far as for deathmatch yah that game was great.

I never had that AI bug. I heard you had join a certain way to avoid it or something. Like all human players join at once. And then open AIs. I've played 4 humans vs. 4 killer AIs.
