Best/Fastest way to transfer money across the US?

I need to send my bro some $$ a few states away. Are there any alternatives to Western union which charges $25 just to send $180? I wanna be able to send the $ tonight (preferably online) and have him be able to pick it up somewhere by him and get cash. Is this even possible? Western union, despite the crazy fee, takes more than 24hrs to transfer the funds unless you go to an actual store, but it's too late for that...

any ideas?

Wire transfer takes about 30 minutes - 3 hours but it's only during business hours and costs $10 - $30 service fee.

However it is pretty damn fast. Send it at 8AM and he should be able to cash it soon after.

All you need is his bank name, branch address, 9 digit ABA routing number, name and account number.

I looked online and it seemed like I had to go into a branch to do this. However, I'm at school and my bank doesn't exist in this state 🙁 Could they do something like this over the phone or no?
 
Is your bank a member of a credit union? I have a no-name CA bank, but it's part of a larger co-op of other banks that I can go to in almost any city.

Some banks will allow wire transfer over the phone. Call your bank tomorrow and ask them?

Ask if they will accept a phone initiated wire transfer? They might.
 
You could also send him a USPS money order via Fedex overnight ... by the time you get done you won't save much over Western Union though.

But you have forgotten the matter of weight ratios. A 5 oz bird cannot carry a 1 pound coconut. But suppose we get two swallows that grasp it by the husk...
 
If you have access to the same bank - deposit in hi s account - FAstest and chapest (Also pointed out above)

Moneygram is jsut as fast as Western Union - usually cheaper - Most WalMart stores have this system.

Western Union is expensive but a few more locations to send/receive the funds.
 
This won't help you at all, but I am a Canadian and here are the two very common services available from major Canadian banks.

1. If I want to put money in the account of ANYONE who uses the SAME bank as me, all I need is their account number. I go on-line with my bank and tell them to move money into the specified account number, and it's done!

2. More general: e-mail money transfers. On-line with my bank I tell them to e-mail money to someone with an e-mail address I specify. Bank takes the money out of my a count and puts it in reserve, then sends the recipient an e-mail. In it they ask recipient for his detailed bank account information - does not matter which bank. With the reply they put the money into recipient's account. I never have any info on the recipient's account - only the bank does.
 
if his bank has a branch near you, maybe you can deposit the $ directly into his account

i think we're gonna try out that moneygram thing. It's cheaper than westernunion and he can get the money in minutes if i send online...sweet! apparently CVS and Walmart have them along with a few local gas stations...not bad!
