I use vmware and have a 6GB vm that I sometimes like to copy onto my usb drive to take home. I use 7zip with zip compress and it takes about 23 minutes on the fastest mode that isn't just copying the files into an archive. I don't remember if i tried using 7z compression format. I will have to try that soon.

Is there a faster method? I do need it compressed since it's going on usb drive. It compressed to 2GB on the fastest zip compression mode.

WinRAR is faster and the file should be smaller compared to 7-Zip.

you sure?

7zips pretty quick now
more important...quadcore!

Yes, I'm sure. I just tried it on a 695 MB folder. WinRAR beat 7-Zip by 11 seconds and was 1 MB smaller using the same settings. I'm sure if the file size was greater you'd see a bigger difference. Both are good programs though. Considering 7-Zip is free I always recommend that to people first.
