Best fan for VenomousX RT Rev.SB-E

I have one of these coolers coming and will try the stock fan it comes with which is identical to the True Spirit 120 but if I decide to change the fan configuration what is the best fan to use on these VenomousX coolers?

Should I be looking at the Silverstone AP-121's or the LEPA Vortex series?

AP-121 isn't good for heatsinks, it works best for directed intake airflow. I've tested it myself on Scythe Mugen 3, the original Scythe fan is several degrees better.

Do you have a particular reason to change the stock fan? What CPU do you have and how far are you looking to OC? If you're looking for quieter operation, downvolt the original fan

The CPU is an i7-3930K and I guess I probably won't change the stock fan on the VenomousX as long as my temps are good. I was hoping to get 4-4.1 GHz with quiet operation. I just wanted to give myself some extra headroom in the cooling dept. just in case.

The default fan spins at a constant 1300 RPM, I would't call it quiet myself. But I think it should be good enough for 4-4.1 even if you downvolt it to sub 1000RPM.

I was thinking about using one of these:

or maybe one of these:

I think either could be controlled via the ASUS BIOS to start @ 70% and ramp up if needed. I will also have (2) 120mm Case Fans firing down from the top as well which should also help to cool the heat sink.

This is the case I'm going to use:

Can't your motherboard control the original via voltage control?

I would advise against using the top fans as intakes. You should get better temps the faster you can get rid of hot air, and hot air escapes best via the top. In the case you linked, I would use one 120mm side intake (lower slot), one 120mm bottom intake, one 120mm rear exhaust, and one 120m top exhaust next to the rear exhaust. That would achieve a traditional front-low to rear-top airflow

It's a pwm fan and according to the specs it's rated 1000-1500rpm, but it seems like a too narrow range to me. I have the feeling it could go down to much lower rpm. And if pwm control doesn't allow it you can always connect it to a voltage controlled header.

So I wouldn't change the fan, those TR fans are quite good. The fans you list don't look good at all for this heatsink. If you do decide to get another fan you want something like Scythe Gentle Typhoons or Noctua NF-P12.

Whatever the BIOS has for fan control, I'm sure it will be fine. The Motherboard is an ASUS P9X79 PRO.

The Silverstone case is actually designed for positive air flow so the top fans are designed to be intakes but they are easy enough to switch/swap around if needed so I'm not too concerned about that but I might use the bottom intake too. I like the case because it has plenty of room and tons of options.

I've looked at the Scythe Gentle Typhoons & Noctua NF-P12's and I don't see much difference between those and the slipstream fans. Noctua fans (IMO) are very ugly so I pretty much refuse to use them in places I can see them 🙂

I'll try to post back on how things go after I build it but it won't be for a couple more weeks.

Thank you both for the feedback though; it’s always good to have more information.

Slipstreams: small blades, big gap between them. Good for casefan.

Gentle Typhoon: big blades, small gap between them. High static pressure, good for cooler/rad.

But the Thermalright fan is probably better than both of them.

And you should to look at this review: http://www.silentpcreview.com/SilverStone_Temjin_TJ04-E. Might change your mind about this case.

Oh. Newegg says it's 1300RPM 3-pin. PWM would obviously be 4-pin.

Thermalright TY-140 is probably the best fan in the world, or among the top 3. Official MTBF of 100,000 hours.

Amazing noise levels -- pause at 4:17-4:22 mark
Amazing performance -- pause at 5:52-5:53 mark

Seriously, there is pretty much nothing better when it comes to noise vs. performance. Plus it has 120mm mounting holes, which means universal fit. Gentle Typhoon AP-14/15 may come close but I doubt it. I've been reading so many fan reviews over the years and I haven't found anything that can beat the TY-140 besides a San Ace with a fan controller.

I did not realize that the TR 140mm fan had 120mm mounting holes, I'll probably go with that one then as long as it fits. I was trying to stay with a 120mm cooling footprint which is why I ultimately decided against the Rampage IV Formula MB and the TR True 140 heat sink.

I can always use the TR 140mm fan in the top of my case if it doesn't work out so well on the VenomousX.
