Best environment for linux

There is a somewhat similar discussion in this forum right now.

The consensus is that it is a matter of taste. There is no reason you shouldn't try both of them out.

matter of taste and also the circustances of your hardware. i have some older pII and PIII class laptops that cant handle KDE and Gnome, but XFCE and Fluxbox work well... and out of those two, based upon my usage habits, fluxbox worked out to be the better one.

They all suck. Ill take my CLI over any desktop environment every day of the week.

You'd like Ratpoison then.

look it up, if you've ever used "screen", it's very similar, except that it's for X.

My current favorites are "ratpoison" and "gnome 2.8". It's very weird, I use one for a while, get tired of it, then go to the other extreme.

Personally I am hoping that enlightenment 17 will provide the perfect balance, but that won't be usable for another year or two.

I use KDE 3.2 primarily, but it can be a real memory whore sometimes, so it's nice to switch back to Blackbox every once in a while.

And yes, nothing will ever beat a text console with splitvt and screen, but this is about graphical environments. 😉

Try watching Girls Gone Wild Volume 302 on a text only console. 😉

That would be scary... What ASCII character does a nipple translate to? 😕
