Best DVD-Rom? (Samsung, LG, Lite-on Pioneer?)

Anyone know of a site which reviews optical readers in detail - besides storage review (not enough reviews anymore)

We have a limited range of readers available from most markets / stores / online retailers here in Australia, but those 4 seem the most common and easiest to find without hassling.

If someone can let me which one or a site, that would be good!
Please try to hold back opinions / people trying to justify their purchase because they got a great deal at best buy - I want comments (or links to reviewing sites) from people who researched their purchase.

I'm looking at the following features
Amount of noise made
Quality / speed of DAE (anything over 10x is fine as long as it's "plextor like" in quality up to 10x)
Cost = nil issue
Tray quality (kinda) (my Lite-on 48x cdrom has an amazingly high quality feel to the tray - very sturdy (and I was very surprised considering it's from Lite-on!)
Possible ability to read copy protected cd's / rip DVD's.

(Also,.. it seems that Samsung and LG have started making DVD reader / CDRW combo drives for only a little bit more in cost - anyone got experience with these?)

EDIT:
here's a link for the 2 combo drives
Samsung model
LG model
*(I wouldn't be surprised if you guys in the USA had similar models?)*

Thank you a tonne.

HELLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOO?
Mc Fly - read my damned post - why do you people not read around here?!!?!!

No justification
No link
No comments on it
AND it's not available in Australia.

re-read my post or don't reply.

sigh............

So sounds like the LG combo might not be too bad - what's your LG combo drive like at DAE with something like EAC?

No it's fine, yours isn't TOO bad 🙂 - I can get Pioneer / LG / Samsung drives here.
I'd prefer some research on why you got them etc - can you tell me IF the LG combo drive is good quality or good at DAE?

Also Samsung seems to be cheap (I just get that feeling) anyone got experience with them - maybe it's just me?

then Toshiba is a good brand. You don't have to be so fuc*** rude you know? I'm just making an alternate suggestion. How the hell am I supposed to know what's available in the boondooks of Australia? Anyway, If I'm Mcfly, then you're the jerk that keeps on eating the sh** in the movie.

If you read the post in the first place you would have seen that toshiba = very rare here, the selection is pioneer, LG, Lite-on and samsung....

Did your post say 'please do not make suggestions OTHER THAN these four' or ' Toshiba DVD readers is excluded because its unavailable down under?'. Does your post say ' please do not make other recommendations other than the 4?'.

Anyway, just trying to be helpful but its hard with rude people. Good luck. Try Google.

Sorry,.....

I just get tired of Americans who have been spoilt with amazingly low prices, amazing product diversity, price matching stores (WTF?), latest technlogy - it annoys me that they often assume everywhere else is the same 🙁

Not only do we have about 1/3 the product range, we pay 25% more too (after converting the $'s) so it's frustrating.

Anyhow - I read the CDR labs review of the LG combo, sounds damned good to me, I think they might have a sale.

I doubt seriously that Toshibas aren't available in Australia.

Out of the 4 you listed they all would be good. I'd probably get the lite-on.

I've been there. Things do cost more. You should probably take it up with the governments trarif/taxation system.

You're right, I exaggerated - Toshiba's are not common, therefore instead of 15-20% more expensive than the us, they are 40% more expensive and harder to find to boot.

Thats OK, we all are a little irritable once in a awhile🙂

If Lite-On is available, its price/performance (based on U.S. prices) is unbeatable. Check CloneCD's website. Link.
The list is for burners but I have reason to believe that its also applicable for the DVD drives for each brand. Liteon drives can read virtually anything, including sub-channel data. My LG burner can has similar capabilities but most people I know that does serious 'archiving'😉 uses Liteon. Liteon drives can be on the loud side though. LG drives are usually very quiet so its up to you which one is more important. I have no experience with Pioneer drives but maybe somebody else can chip in. A plus with Liteon is that firmware updates are abundant. If you want to know why I said Toshiba (unfortunately, its unavailable in your area), its the only DVD-reader recommended by CloneCD. But of course, other DVD readers work also.

Something tells me to avoid the Samsung. Try the Lite-on.
Pioneers are slot load. I have little experience with that because in my mind that's another thing to break.

LG aka Lucky Goldstar gets good reviews for CD burners but I dunno about the DVD-ROMs.

I have a slot loading pioneer, and it rocks, best dvd drive I have ever had. It is really good quality, and 16x is the speed. If you want some reviews go here, and check their drive reviews, it is rated pretty high, here is another review of it. Its a great drive, I can rip a full dvd in like 7minutes with mine.

If you ever want to use mini cd's or business card cd's (unlikely) then avoid the slot-load pioneer. I'd go Lite-On or LG, not sure which though. Something tells me to avoid the Samsung too.

If you really want something that's gonna beat burn protection go to the Nero website and CloneCD website, and others, and look at their drive compatibilty rankings. Use that criteria to pick from what's available to you. Out of your choices, I don't think anything is really going to fit the bill, but if you have access to a Plextor burner, that itself should cover all your bases (1 Plextor CDRW = burn everything but some safedisc, 1 Toshiba + 1 LiteOn CDRW = burn everything). Also you should know the new securom is uncopyable.

BTW, the Toshiba are the best. 😀

I have a Samsung SM332B and I love it. Quiet, no coasters and works as advertised. DVD playback is awsome too. Made it region free with a simple flash. The only thing I don't know is how long it's going to last, but so far so good.

Well I've done some hunting around this morning.

It seems the LG is the nicest according to a CDRlabs review, but I can't for the life of me find *ANY* firmware updates for ANY LG drives on the internet (yet) which worries me about support.

Also this new LG is not listed on Clone CD's website as a supported drive (whoever linked that, good idea)
I also found mention of one of the newer GDD 4120? (i think) drives on newsgroups having issues reading a DVD - only one but it was interesting, although I think it was one of the slimline DVD drives.

Either way I'm still considering this LG - as it does sound like a good combo and I'm just wary of Samsung in general.

mmmmmmm

I personally like the LG better than a LiteOn just because it's quieter. It's DAE is fast enough and the tray is of good quality compared to the flimsy feel of those liteon trays. If your able to get the LG combo for less than a DVD and a CDRW then get it cuz i've built comps with that combo drive and it has unbeatable quality and plenty of speed.
