best dvd-rom for ripping

hey guys, i'm startinig to get interested in the market for a dvdrom to rip some dvds into divx/vcd that sorta deal... im looking at a few models right now... the pioneer line seems to be pretty decent for ripping dvds.... any suggestions as to one thats just fabulous for ripping dvds? thanks..

Pioneer = :D
Toshiba = :(

Toshiba's have a Max DVD rip of like 2x. Pioneers are much faster.
I have an AOpen 12x Pioneer rebadge that's really nice, but the best DVDrom by far now is the Pioneer 106S - it uses the ata66 spec instead of 33, that's an impressive boost trust me :D

The best source for this information is the CD Speed site. They have a benchmarking utility and test just about every drive out there.

The current reigning champ is the Lite-On LTD163.

"The Lite-On LTD163, a 16x DVD-ROM drive can read audio at FULL 20-48x speed!.
This is fast enough for making audio copies on the fly with a 16x, 20x and even a 24x recorder.
The DVD performance is also excellent, 11.92x on average which is as fast as the AOpen DVD-1640."


Keep in mind that DVD/VCD ripping is data transfer not DAE. Fast DAE is nice to have though.
