Hey guys, I would just like to know what the current best CD-RW drive and DVD-ROM (dont need to burn dvd's just read em) drives are... I don't just mean speed, I also mean quality.. I don't mind spending extra money for the best quality / support.. Plextor still in the lead in CD-RW? What about DVD-ROM drive? thanks for the info.

Toshiba drives are very good. I have one myself. And get a Plextor. GREAT cd-rw's.

Lately, liteon seems to be making great products, and they seem to be cheap too. I ordered a liteon 16x DVD and a 32x12x40x burner drive, also liteon (they haven't come yet) ;)

I don't know about DVD-ROM's but when it comes to CD-RW's the two major IDE choices are Plextor and Lite-On. I think it's safe to say that Plextor's have marginally better performance than Lite-On's. However, you pay a premium for that small delta. Lite-On's have a much better cost-to-performance ratio.

If you want the best get the Lite-On 16x DVD drive, and the Plextor 40x burner.

Another happy LiteOn owner...24x10x40 burner was a great buy, and I didn't consider the extra $$$ for the Plextor worth it. If you want to compare specific drives in detail check out http://www.cdrinfo.com

I think so far almost all the reviews I've seen put the performance of the LiteOn drives above their Plextor counterpart.

Another good CD-RW brand that wasn't mentioned is Yamaha, and as for DVD-ROMs, Pioneer's great.
