Looking to spend under $100 and I found a couple on newegg for around $60. It's for my laptop, so I'll be putting it into an external case with firewire connection.

Also, whats the thing with DVD+R and DVD-R

search and you'll see people recommending the NEC 3500a (now replaced by 3520).

and unless you have a over 2 year old DVD player, just use DVD+ and don't worry.

search DVD in Software if you want to know how to back up movie DVDs.

DVD Burner = NEC 3520A. Check out the NEC sub forum of club.cdfreaks.com, they already have a modified firmware going for this burner, and like the modified NEC 3500A firmwear, it'll get better by the week. My friend just bought a Bytecc 5.25" firewire enclosure for the NEC 3500A, hooked up to a PC laptop running WinXP. Using Nero 6 for burning, it works great. My 3 year old Sony DVD player plays DVD+R media just fine.

Thanks!

Is it slower because it's going via firewire via the enclosure as supposed to going into a desktop via the IDE cable?

I don't know how accurate Nero's speed testing tool is, but Firewire transfers at 29MB/sec, while USB 2.0 does 23MB/sec. Based on the chart for NEC 3520A writing speed here, there shouldn't been any slow down. I need to run some tests to back that up...

Plextor, hands down.
Buy the Plextor PX-716A and if your anyway disapointed I will buy it from you! lol
I have 2, I could use another 🙂
