Most current versions of playback software are better than WinDVD 5...including WinDVD 8. Current versions will also support your videocard for HD optical (up to 1080i), whereas WinDVD 5 won't.
I use VLC because it'll play anything thrown at it. The UI isn't the prettiest, though (it can be skinned). I'll probably go with AnyDVD from Slysoft when I get my BR/HD optical drive.
