Best DVD Drive or CDROM Drive Recommendations?

Hi all, I've gotten sick of all CDROM drives I have used failing after a few months, and also having problems reading CDRW and CDR media. They have ALL been multi-read format, and new (40x to 52x). Brands like Artec, I/O Magic, Afreey, BTC, HiVal, et al. So I am wondering if I would have better luck with a DVD drive reading other media. Are they any better at reading CDRW and CDR media?

Of those of you that have tested many DVD drives, what are the best, and what do the bench and testing sites recommend? From what I have seen, the LiteOn LTD-163 is about the best, but I just saw an Asus DVD-E616 and it is very impressive (ATA 100). Link. I have not seen any reviews on it yet.

I've never tried any Asus, Pioneer, or any other big name/more expensive CDROM drives. Can anyone recommend the BEST CDROM drive if you know of any that read ALL MEDIA PERFECTLY?
Thanks,
Clint

best for the money is still the liteon 163.
while the ata 100 interface for the asus looks great, in reality no optical drive even exceeds ata33 transfers.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've been looking a bit and I found a review of the Asus and it said the test results were the same regardless of interface used (ata33, 66 or 100) and regardless of cable (40 pin or 80 pin)!

I have always used Toshiba CD and DVD players, but they do have there limitations... Slow DAE and slow DVD read speeds if you rip DVD's... Check out some of the reviews at cdrlabs or storagereview and judge whats best for your needs...

I'm very satisfied with my new PIONEER DVD-116T 16x OEM that I got in my new system a month ago.

I use it for DVD playing/ripping and as my main drive. Works like a charm and was not enpensive at all.

Hope this helps.

I won't be watching any DVD's on a PC....I was only entertaining getting one if they were any better at reading CDR and CDRW media than that of a CDROM drive.

Mark does yours read CDR & CDRW media well?
Thanks guys. 🙂

I'd go against an Asus drive. I've got a 50X CD ROM drive from them and it sounded like a jet plane taking off and it was slower than my old Acer 8X drive because it took much longer to spin up and find the info... I was so tired of my drive that I bought a LG 16X DVD drive and I can say it's pretty good. Probably not the best but the price/performance ratio seems pretty good to me.

I've noticed that too. I use to have some old 'slow' cdrom drives, but they were much faster at accessing disks! Wish I would have keep them. But they're a bi*ch when you need to install a 650mb program or need to drag a 500mb file off them to your HD. If I could find a 52x or 56x that would spinup & access a CDR disk immediately, I'd jump on that.....this is exactly what I am looking for now.

I saw of couple of places make a comment that the Asus DVD-E616 (I mentioned above) has some problems spinning up after you insert a disk, and when it spins down, it takes a long time to get going again. So, I guess I'll scratch that one from the list. Other than that it rated very high. The Lite-One-Up LTD-163 still has the highest scores I've seen. Since the ATA100 spec on the Asus DVD-E616 means nothing, I'm leaning towards the 163 unless I can find a PERFECT CDROM drive instead.

My DVD ROM reads all media types with no problems at all.

If you get one not only will you be able to read all media and watch DVDs but you will also be able to backup DVDs that you wish to have backup copies of.
