Best dvd/cdrw dvd / cdrw Combo Drive?

What is the best dvd/cdrw drive currently available? Since, I haven't been keeping up with the latest tech news in this field, I thought some anandtechers could give me some better insight and advice. Also, "best" means the following:

1. Firmware of drive can be upgraded to allow play of dvd's from ALL Regions
2. Compatibility of reading/copying cds/cdrws/cdrs.
3. Speed
4. Noise (quieter is better)

Yup, Samsung's got the bead on the combo format... And http://www.provantage.com has the bead on Samsung storage prices: $66.37 for the SM-352BRNS (the retail box with the 8MB buffer - IOW, the one you want) + reasonable s/h if you live near one of Provantage's warehouses and can use UPS Brown.
Hmmm, newegg has it for $74. w/free shipping and i see in one of their pix that Nero is in the box now - used to be Roxio on Samsungs - even better (I've even seen both packed with some models!)! So it's six or a half-dozen...
.bh.
:sun:
p.s. I don't know if the ROM's been hacked yet, but if not now, soon...

Thanks, this is great! However, the drive seems to have some difficulty with various media negatively impeding the advertised performance of this drive. Go anandtech!

I purchased a Lite-on CD-RW/DVD combo from Newegg and it works great. Quiet, fast, inexpensive, and comes with decent software (Nero Express).

which model is it? I'm thinking of getting a slot load dvd/cdrw, but this would be an open channel for computer noise to pass through to the users ears... I'm attempting to build a super quiet, overclocked shuttle system....akh desicision. The slot load model is much shorter in length and depth compared to these Other ones. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Go with the Liteon LTC-48161H. Great media compatibility. The Samsung has problems burning at the highest speed and slows down a lot when about 80% complete.

My samsung drive works great, didn't think a burner could work this well with all the bad experiences i have had in the past

If I can fit two panasonic CW-8122-B drives in the 5.25 bay, I could copy cd's "on the fly!" I've also heard that the LiteOn's have longer length compared to the new Samsung combo. Is this true? The slim drives also allow more airflow in my shuttle case. What is the sony dru series? Please keep the suggestions coming!😀

Good luck with the Samsung. Hopefully you are able to find media that you can burn at 52x speed. I have not found any yet. I have tried all media that sell in retail stores. None of them burn completely at 52x speed. It drops to 40x when it is 80% complete with most media.

The Verbatim 48x and 52x media, it burns completely at 48x. For 700 MB of data, I get a complete burn in 2:42. The other media takes around 2:55. Not much difference.

They have released several firmware updates in the last month. I have updated everytime hoping for better media compatibility, but it has not happened. I get my fastest burns on my Liteon 52x24x52. Burns at 52x with every media I have used. I mainly use Verbatim 48x media for my data CDs and Maxell 40x media for my audio burns with the Liteon 52x24x52. I will most likely buy the next Liteon Combo when it comes out if it burns media at 52x and rewrites at 32x.

The samsun is considerably shorter in length compared to Lite-On drives. I need this space for airflow since I have a shuttle SN45g computer.

I've been using the Samsung and it's SOOO quiet and short...AWESOME! 😎
