Best DVD burner?

My DVD drive in my comptuerjust bit the dust. I want to replace it with a DVD burner so I can copy and make home movies. So it has to burn DVD±R/RW good.

My computer is not the newest (Athlon XP), so I dont have any SATA slots, so the drive has got to be IDE.

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10, but that shouldnt matter, it should detect the new drive right off the bat I would think.

So whats the best, and most reliable drive you guys can recommend me?

And Verbatim makes good blank media right?

thanks

The best I have found is Pioneer DVR-213dbk. This one is Sata so I would go for a Pioneer like the DVR-115dbk. I have had drives by asus and Optiarc and the Pioneer blows them away when it comes to burning.

I'm not sure about IDE DVD burners..
For media though, if you want the best of the best.. go for Taiyo Yuden media.

You could try looking up CDFreaks.com for reviews of drives you're looking at. The Samsung SH-S203B was one of their favorites a while back, but it is a SATA drive, and I'm not sure if anything new has popped up.

I like the Sony or Liteon series of dvd burners myself.
As to media, at cdfreaks, they always suggest you only
buy dvd media that was made in Japan ... it says where
on the package. They claim they are of much better quality
than media made in Taiwan.

Yeah I was reading on CDFreaks and most everyone seemed to like the Pioneer 115. Speaking of CDFreaks is there a search function anywhere? Am I just missing it, or do you have to register to use it:thumbsdown:?

I'll probably end up buying the drive off of Newegg, and then I'll go ahead and get a pack of blank DVDS. Beyond that though I just have a Wal-Mart in my town, and they only sell Memorex and Maxell (I think). They any good? I dont object to buying more online but if I can get quality stuff locally I would prefer that.

Also there isnt a difference in +R vs. -R is there?

Just from my personal research on this forum and others, DVD-R generally is more compatible with stand alone DVD players. DVD+R is supposedly superior when it comes to storing and backing up data.

I've had two Lite on units, the first one died somewhat, after a ton of burning, not being able to read dual layer dvd's. Went to the boneyard, the second is running strong.

So I bought a Samsung 22x, and this one is really really nice. But time will tell, who knows. With the price of these drives. they are more or less disposable, like everything else made in China or thereabouts.
