What's the point of buying a high speed DL burner when cost of the media is prohibitive and few people use it to begin with?

I don't suppose you get almost 7000 posts in 4 months if you actually read things before you reply.

And BTW, DL media has gone from over $10 a piece (and impossible to find) to about $5 a piece in just a few months. That's how much single-layer media was when I got my Pioneer 2X burner, which still works fine.
DL will only be cheap when SL is obsolete just like with cd's now
DL is a cool ideas but 8.5gb just don't do me any good.
What would we do with 1.2gb cd's today???

i am actually looking for a good DVD burner myself and im prolly gonna get the plextor 716 A or an NEC. Everyone is praising the NEC 3520A but how is the NEC 3530? Is that better than the 3520? How is the 3530 opposed to the Plextor 716A?

The two best burners are Plextor and Lite-On. If the Lite-On was the same price as the Plextor, then I'd get the Lite-On. Right now I have two Lite-On opticals...a DVD-ROM and a CD burner. I've been waiting for speeds to go up and prices to go down on the DVD burners and they are really good right now.

Here's a Lite-On Dual Layer DVD burner for $54! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106964

For about twice as much for $119, you can get the Plextor Dual-Layer burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827131338

If you've got the money, get the Plextor, or if you simply want to save the money, get the Lite-On. Both are great burners. I've used both and both have been equally stunning. They are the best because they burn the best for making movie or game "backups". Doing "backups" is the most demanding thing you can ask a burner to do and I see few (if any) beating these guys.

One thing you can save money on that is definitely not needed. Don't buy SATA optical drives. Your wasting your money if you do that. Just stick to IDE drives...opticals that is. SATA hard drives might net you some performance but I digress.

NEC one have been great to me so far. Avoid the Lite-On drive, been having problems with them reading different media type, especially regular CD disc. Lite-On is not the great company they were from the CD-RW drive they made in the past. Seem like a whole differnt company in quality from CD-RW to DVD+RW drives.

That's totally backwards thinking. CDs aren't really obsolete, and the only argument that they are obsolete is because DVD-Rs are so cheap. DL is also getting cheaper whether you like it or not. It's ridiculous for you to say otherwise. Also, you're ignoring the real reason for DL -- making perfect copies of DL movies. Nobody is worried about getting DL for data archival.

If you don't care about price, definitely get the Plextor. Most people just can't justify paying twice as much as the other drives for it. The NEC is a good drive, but the Pioneer 109 is better in almost every way. There's even a Pioneer firmware now that allows bitsetting, which was the only advantage NEC had.
