Best DVD Burner?

There are too many...Heh.

What are some good models with better support and faster burn speeds, good compatibility with discs and players, good software, etc.?

Thank you very much!

I like LG I have own 3 of them, (sold one and still have 2 of them) 1 burned out but I burn a shot load of movies with them. but I think everywhere has atleast a 1 year warranty any ways.

I've got an old 4X Pioneer and an NEC 8X Model "Something" that both work great. I don't burn a lot of movies but when I do I don't remember ever making a coaster that wasn't my fault. I would probably go with the NEC if I had to get a replacement right now based on the number of satisfied users, but either one would be fine.

You asked about compatability with other players.... no problem there either. I haven't found anything they wouldn't play in. I use various brands of media with no problem but most of what I have on hand is TDK and Maxell.

Thanks so far, but I've been hearing about NEC 3530 and even 3540...What are these?

3540 is going to be the new version of the 3520.. buuut there is 3rd party firmware out that significantly improves the 3520's already sweet performance.. and ive heard that the new 3540 might not be able to use this firmware. anyways, check hot deals forum... 47.99+2.99 shipping on newegg right now. 🙂

im trying out the plextor 716a got good reviews in pc magazine. burns dvds and cds. ive also heard good things about the nec 3520a. the plextor is expensive but seems like it does everything but the dishes lol

There is no best, they all have their up' and down' side
The weird thing is that a dvdr that I burned may not be readable in [any name brand here] but works fine in {any name brand here}

Weird right?

NEC 3520A w/ modified firmware + Nero 6.6 + TY 8x DVD+R = Win

See sig for modified firmware. FujiFilm (made in Japan) @ BestBuy or Rima.com. Burn at 12x.

I use a nec 3520a and when I went onto there website at necsam.com they gave a media list for the 3500 because they did not have one out yet for the 3520. I am using fujifilm discs and with the firmware they burn at 16x. I also use powerdvd because when i called there tech support they told me to get rid of my dell media experience and use powerdvd. Dell media experience sucked.

The NEC is a great drive, but the new Pioneer does 6X DVD+R DL, 6X DVD-R DL and is much faster at ripping movies. I think the Plextor is the only other drive that can do that, and the Pioneer is only $57.

People also say it's much quieter than other 16X burners.

Of course, by the time DL media gets cheap there will be a better burner you can get cheap, but at this point anything you get you'll probably keep a long time (since nothing will ever be faster than 16X and you'll use single-layer most of the time), so it's nice to have something that burns a full DL in a little under 20 min.

Those LightScribe drives are also a cool idea, except for the fact that it takes 25 min to do a best quality label (whereas my $90 Epson can label a disc in 1 min and do it in color).

What's the point of buying a high speed DL burner when cost of the media is prohibitive and few people use it to begin with?

I don't suppose you get almost 7000 posts in 4 months if you actually read things before you reply.

And BTW, DL media has gone from over $10 a piece (and impossible to find) to about $5 a piece in just a few months. That's how much single-layer media was when I got my Pioneer 2X burner, which still works fine.
