Many of the popular drive manufacturers according to AT locals:

NEC
Lite-on (my personal favorite)
Pioneer
Plextor

I second the Plextor 712. Very nice drive. The only negative is that it's only a single layer burner, but with the price of DL media, and not much anticipation of a decline in the foreseeable future, does it really matter? I don't think so, but that's just MHO.

Plextor was very successful at clearing the channel of the 712 with their rebate program that started last fall and went through the end of March. Very hard to find one now (except for the SATA version) - and the lowest price I found is $110 (I think I paid around $70. AR for mine). The 716 is it now and it has turned out to be fine after initial stumbles. Many are awaiting the new slot-loaded version with bated breath...

I agree with most of these people, too. I have the Plextor 708a (I think that was it) and it's great. But not Double/dual layer...

So I bought the NEC 3500a for about $60 at newegg... and it's even cheaper now!!

So those TWO for sure... everyone raves about the NEC... but Plextor is known for their excellent quality.

I sure got a deal on my Plex 712 then. Picked it up for $49.99 (plus like $8.00 for ground shipping at Tiger). Still, at less then $60, back in December, it was a steal. It was retail too, and I can always use an extra IDE cable!

Did you ever get your rebates - TD is known for rebate problems. I wouldn't do business with TD before but since they are part of the group that foisted the Ultra X-Connect off on an unsuspecting public, they are even lower on my "used food" list than ever...

I got the $30 rebate, though it took a over 2 months, nearly 3. I did have to raise you know what to get my rebates on the *free* case I bought though. Three $20 rebates for a lousey "free" Soyo case with poor airflow. It took from August until February to get them, but I got 'em. Frankly, I'm more upset with the case than the wait for the rebates. Fortunately, it was nothing a Freezer 64 couldn't take care of.

Ever since Cyberrebate went belly up, I've learned to keep copies of my submissions, and keep buggin 'em until they pay up. So far, I haven't gotten stiffed yet, though Western Digital is trying my patience at the moment...

Thanks guys,

I ended up getting the NEC 3520A since it is much cheaper than the plextor, and did not want to deal with rebates.

Thanks again!
