Basically, i have some cash here and wanted a DVD+-r dual format burner. I havent followed them for a couple of months but what is the best one that is available at this time. and price. I want to know which one to get
Im running XP

yea but thats expensive as hell. Im looking for a bang for your buck one since i just burn cdrs and dvd's and dont need the fanciest of things

so that one is good? Any firmware hacks or anything special about it? Also i say hd-burn but can most dvd players read it?? I mean i do have a mintek which reads everything under the sun

You pay for what you get, quality wise. If you want best then I suggest picking up the Plextor. If you want an OK drive that might die after a couple of burns, pick up some other no-name drives.

Yes the NEC is a good drive. I put it in my budget builds. The other one I would consider is the TDK Indy (slightly more expensive but outperforms most other dvd drives).

BEST = Plextor (as linked above)
BEST BANG BUCK = NEC 1300A. I have it and it's solid. 4x+ and 4x- media. solid. used Nero 6, Nero 5.5 and NTI CD/DVD Maker. Great ripping abilities too.
alot of TDK burners are rebadged NEC drives.

I am never going to buy anything but a Plextor again. I've gone thru a bunch of burners and the only ones that never broke or wore out were the Plextors.

That Plextor PX708A is looking pretty tasty. 🙂

Dvd burners are only going to get cheaper soon they will be as much as cd burners. And some companies are anouncing dual layer burners, personally I would wait.

I don't think DVD recorders will get below $100 soon so you won't save a whole lot by waiting.
Yes the higher end drives may drop in price but they are only expensive because they are the latest greatest. If DVD drives dropped below $100 DVD/CDRW,CDRW,DVD, and cd-rom drives would also have to slide down which probably won't happen until cd-rom is dicontinued. You can only cut so much before profit suffers and as long as people are buying steadily at current prices you won't see much more change. The only reason 4X drives are getting cheaper is because they were overpriced to begin with because they were the latest greatest. They have now slid into the 2.4X price slot withe the fading of 2.4Xdrives. 8X will eventually replace 4X in the budget slot ($100) but with 8X just emerging and 16X not on the horizon I wouldn't keep my hopes up.

Hehe, that's usually what Bose fans say about Klipsch, B&W, Norh, Thiel et al 😉

I got the lite-on DVD +- R/RW Drive for $139.99 @ newegg.com

It's the Lite-on 440 (or something like that)

damn good drive... no problems at all with it.

Ok, so i have 3 options. I also see lite-on has and 8x. What would you guys get?? I mean hell, i still use a 24x lite-on i got 2 years ago and it works perfectly and there was no need to even get a $10 52x but anyway, which deal would you guys go for I do burn a good amount of dvds

second that

I got a cheap ($64 after coupon) clearance Memorex 2.4x DVD+RW. Not the fastest, but it's nice and it works well. I'm sure the Memorex 4x is good too. It's one format though, but I have yet to encounter stuff where DVD+R/RW doesn't work.

I say xtreme dvd-r's four like $36 shipped in the hot deal forum.
Or saw MEmorex $53 shipped 50pack dvd+r or dvd-r from officedepot

I love it when people post, "I WANT THE BEST (whatever)........for $10."

How long is the wait for dual layer ? I am on a budget and need a new CDRW burner anyway so while I'm at it, may as well make it a DVDRW. The point is to buy and be prepared for the future too without buying again for a couple more years. I don't think I can wait past Christmas time though... would it be out by then and would it be < $200 ?

What about the wait for 8x burners ? Out by Christmas ?
