The math logic behind the game is based off of the D&D ruleset. IE: how many points can be allocated to what skills, how your armor is calculated, what spells you have and when you get them, what their effect is, what kind of monsters you can expect to see at each level, what the maximum level is, how battle is conducted.

I would deffinitely play Planescape, BG1&2. Only after that would I look into NWN and all of its many modules.

Planescape is awesome but 2nd edition. Neverwinternights is great and 3rd edition (not 3.5). The differnces between 3 and 3.5 are fairly insignificant. I would buy both expansions for NWN for the additional skills and feats and then play online or custom built modules. The original stories are alright, but the user built ones tend to be the best. See http://www.neverwintervault.com for a nice collection. neverwinterconnections(.com) sets up online games if your into cooperative play, but take some time to learn how to role play from your pc first; they will even catogorize games for you - campaign, hack & slash, heavy roleplay etc..

NWN is overrated. can't control a full party like in baldur's gate. d&d is boring without a diverse party.

What's that one arcade D&D game where up to 4 people could play? it was a side scrolling one (well u could move in a 2D plane) and you could be like a cleric, warrior, elf, etc.

NWN for the PC and Knights of the Old Republic(PC & Console) are two of the better series that make use of the new 3.0 rules with minor alterations to make them playable in a somewhat limited realm that video games provide.

The absolute best way to experience true RPG playing with a D&D rule system is to find a persistent world that has heavy DM interaction running on the NWN DM toolset.

Baldurs Gate & Planescape Torment make use of the older 2.X AD&D rule systems.

I have very fond memories of Pool of Radiance on my Commodore 64. Kept me from doing homework while i was growing up. And more recently, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 were very fun. I'm trying to get into NWN, but I think I'm getting too old to play video games :(
