Best DSL Modem-router w/ flexable blocking features ?

Looking to replace Verizon DSL modem because it doesn't provide service blocking capabilities that I need - any suggestions - need two features:

1. block by time / day: on my old Aldelphia cable modem it allowed to block all traffice by time (could have it automatically get my kids off the net at 10:00pm 🙂

2. my current Verizon DSL modem allows blocking of specific services e.g. AOL IM from a drop down pick list (nice). but no scheduling feature like the aldelphia modem.

This is possable to get both capabilities in one modem ??

Any recommendations apprciated

The Router part of the Combo Modem/Router is not as good as a stand-alone Router, and the selection in the free market is very limited.

Most of these combos let you disable the Router part, and use the unit as gateway modem.

If you can do so on your unit disable the Router part and buy a stand alone Cable/DSL Router.

thanks - assuming I can disable the router part - do you have a recommendation on a stand alone DSL router that has the above two features ?

usually you put the "modem/router" combo into "bridge" mode. For the standalone router with alot of features, my favorite is a Gentoo IpTables router 🙂

every possible thing you can imagine (and then some)

thanks for the Gentoo router suggestion - butttttttt - I'm not really a power user (at least any more). Don't have time to setup a Linix box to service as a router (its on my want-to-do, "do-list" - after the "honey-due" list 🙂

I was thinking more along the lines of an off the self "dummy" fire/wall router that has pre-set services to "allow/disable" and a scheduling table (day & time).

any suggestions

thx

Check out the Zoom series.

Note - I'm not making one cent from any sales so have no problem suggesting them at the moment. No conflict of interest.
