When I had my Droid, I was using DroidMod (formerly Sholes.Info). However I gather that things have changed and there is a Cyanogenmod available for Droid, which is probably the best.

I've been using Ultimate Droid. Haven't tried Cyanogen, but there was some furor recently and it seems that Ultimate Droid might basically be a rip off of Cyanogen anyway. :)

Cyanogen wasn't mad about them ripping off the code...just that they flamed him after they ripped off the code.

question - tried cyanogen and google apps are removed. I wikied and understand it's for legal reason, and there's a workaround .. but i'm lazy (i tried installed the APK files and the install failed) -

Ultimate Droid rom - does it includethe default google apps?

if you installed correctly, you should have booted to recovery, flashed both the cyanogen mod zip and the google apps zip...did you do that?

once you install it correctly, future updates will always automatically backup and restore the google apps

I think I got the order wrong.
Installed cyon first, rebooted and works fine. Renamed the apps zip to update.zip and attemped to install. Got an error message. Then tried to use astro and tried to manuallt install apks as well

don't reboot after you install cyanogen. flash cyanogen zip then immediately flash google apps zip, without rebooting. reboot only after you've flashed both zips.

i'd recommend at this point that you do the following:

reboot into recovery
do a wipe
flash cyanogen
flash google apps zip
reboot

you should be set after this.

You don't need to rename the gapps zip file either.

I'm using Cyanogen 5.0.6.2 with Smoked Glass-esque 1.5, along with Bekits 5 slot 1Ghz kernel. Runs great, looking forward to CM 5.0.7. :)

I switched to Cyanogen last night. I like it so far. I just wish the launcher had persistent buttons like Helix2.

Hey guys, thanks for the clarification - I resisted using Rom Loader /changer (whatever the heck it's called) since it cost 4 measly bucks, but then just gave up and used it to load the Google apps pack. Worked perfectly, and now I can change roms on whim.

So far I really like the default Blackdroid theme on Ultimate Droid, running at 600 because 1gz blew through battery life (though I think the battery notification was off).

Fast, stable, and slick - though I'm sure I'll try more roms soon.

I like cyon but I'm too lazy to track down kernels and all that jazz so ultimate was a nice quick fix (though I get that they stole code)

Cyanogen with the Clean Looks theme

I like it, except that there isn't a themed icon for every app. Not a big deal, as there's no way you could expect something like that. Lock screen with invisible sliders or whatever is nice.
