My gf loves the $50/ month prepaid but kinda wants a smartphone. I'm thinking that battery life is super important. Not too many to chose from but just curious about opinions.

S3 has the best battery life on T-Mo, along with the best screen and everything else (unless 4.7" is too big for her). It's sort of expensive off-contract though.

The new Nexus 4 will drop in two weeks and should be the fastest chip and (probably) best bang/buck. It will come with a sealed battery, though, and no one knows how long it will last. The Note 2 will also arrive soon (any time after next week's event), if she's going to carry it in a purse... Monstrously big screen and (replaceable) battery, but also $700.

The Note2 is coming to Tmobile, probably just after the 25th. Its blazing fast but its 5.5", which may or may not be an advantage.

Like the others said, I'll echo that you might want to hold off til November when the next line of Google Nexus phones come out - and if the rumors are correct, we'll see an entire line, with a phone from each manufacturer (LG is a lock, Sony rumors are abound, Samsung still sounds like its in the fray, and even HTC has been mentioned) all at different price points.

Its what I'm planning, but obviously you'll have to buy the phone outright (which shouldn't be too bad, current Nexus--> galaxy nexus is 350 which is pretty awesome).

Its been said above

current best phones
  • Samsung Galaxy S3 (battery can be upgraded. Stock battery is 7.98 wHr. If you do not mind extra thickness you can get a 15.5 wHr battery for about $20 to $25, so pretty much double battery life). 4.8 inch screen
  • HTC One S (non upgradable battery of 6.1 wHr) 4.3 inch screen

best phone that came out last year but is still great
  • Galaxy Nexus (battery can be upgraded. Stock battery is 6.48 wHr. If you do not mind extra thickness you can get a 14 wHr battery for about $20 to $25,so pretty much double battery life.) 4.65 inch screen. Processor is older dual core a9 at 1.2 ghz so the Galaxy S3 and HTC One S are up to 60% faster (due to higher ghz and faster krait cores) but you get all the Nexus goodness and fast updates without doing custom roms.

upcomming phones that will be faster
  • Galaxy Note 2.
  • LG Nexus 4.

I have a galaxy s3 on sprint with an extended battery for 2 weeks now and I am loving it.

Cool I'll look into the Nexus. $350 is doable and would be a killer Xmas present if she doesn't upgrade before then.

I'd imagine the new Nexus being released would put some pressure to at lower the Nexus' price some more. It'd be worth waiting until the 29th (Google's next announcement) to decide.

I'm happy with the Google Nexus on T-Mobile prepaid, and $350 is a good price.

Bought mine used but the new one is worth it too.I have yet to see a woman with either Note. S3 may appeal, if not, GNex is the best phone to get. It may drop to $299 soon, wait out the next Nexus launch for the price drop or just to see what the new one is like. IMO, on T-Mobile, no better bang for the buck than a Gnex, especially if the OP is buying out of contract.

My main concern is that the new ones launch at $450+, and I won't be able to buy the old one because its immediately removed from stock.
At 400 Bucks, I'm willing to buy a new one, but at 450 bucks, I'd rather just get a 350 dollar google nexus.

Depending on how much talking you do:

Get a hotspot and use any phone you want. Yes its expensive to buy the phone outright, but that 30 dollar unlimited data plan means you save tons of money over the other carriers, or even Tmobiles other plans. I have seriously been considering that.
