You may all be surprised to know that many of the DivX files "floating" around the 'Net (IRC, rather) are the product or some rather elaborately set-up groups, akin to the VCD scene. Many even have very professional web sites. I think it's interesting how this is all happening on IRC, making it very difficult for the MPAA to come after them... unless they decide to file a lawsuit against IRC in general. But then who would they sue? Hmmm....

.paldo, Its illegal to lend your brother those Adult videos. You have to send it to me, so I can [cough] inspect [/cough] it to see if its in good shape or not. ;) :p

Damn. Where do you guys download those DivX movies? I'm too damn cheap to rent or buy a copy.

Though I would buy a copy of chicken run for target practice. ;)

See.... I'd probably download a lot more DivX vids, but I have a fetish for DVD's. Paying $20 for a good quality DVD will beat spending time downloading a DivX ANY DAY IMHO... However, downloading a couple just to check out the technology is cool... and it's sweet too. Wish all my MPEG music vids were DivX instead ;)

Yeah. I want to see a Divx movie, just to see the quality of it. I've seen the trailors, but its not the same

Speaking of DivX movies, has anyone tried to encode any?

I've been trying to encode my own copy of Shawshank Redemption which I deCSSed, and I've been trying the latest version of FlaskMpeg + latest DivX codec, but the damn thing seems to crap out at random points in the file. First attempt I can get up to 350mb, 2nd attempt up to 200mb, 3rd attempt up to 900mb. Never a complete encode. And since this takes such a long time, it's annoying the hell out of me.

Any suggestions (or alternate, better encoding programs) are appreciated.

Also, do any of you guys know how to encode DIRECTLY to MPEG-4? Kind of like those "JHU" rips on DALnet?

Do you guys trade those on IRC channels, or is there a place to download them?

I'm confused.

Rza,

That's exactly where I got my DivX-encoding instructions. They all use FlaskMPEG, which doesn't appear to be Windows 2000 friendly, at least on my system.

SSP,

I doubt DivX files are available for download on "web sites". They are much too large (650mb+) and they are 99% "pirate". The entire Internet "underground" lives on IRC; on IRC, you would presumably be getting these files directly from other people (the IRC "servers" just carry the text of your conversations and provide the chatrooms... all file sends are person-to-person).

If you've never tried IRC before, get mIRC from mIRC.com and read the docs.

LocusTux! You need to use the Advance DIVX Bitrate Calculator from Digital Digest to calculate bitrate. All my movies comes out to about 640 meg. I need what is left so I can insert menus to autostart movies when it is burned to disc.

Yeah, I chose the right bitrate for my movie to take up 2 CD's. I want it like that so I can encode it @ high bitrate and resolution, to preserve quality. 352x240 @ 600kbps sucks.

Athlon's encode divx much faster. Mulan, a one and a half hour movie takes me a little over 3 and a half hours on my athlon 900 using Flask.

Use vobdec do take the vob files and put them on your hard drive. DECSS or DODSRWIN often does not work now because of newer encryption.

mulan is a cartoon, there's a million times less shades of color in a given frame.

As soon as i get back to school and get my bandwith back, i'll start renting movies and ripping them. It'll be nice to have a decent collection of movies, plus i got tv-out and everything.

Just so you know... We're not talking about the same type of "DivX" as the Circuit City DivX rent-to-own technology. This is something completely different... Cheers!

LocutusX, just downloaded a divx movie from a warez site. Its not hard to find, you just have to look in the right place.

BTW - I have used IRC before. I havent used it for a long time (did'nt know much about trading files).

SSP, um, you don't need to tell me where to get DivX. I was a server on an <unspoken> IRC channel for about 2 months, and now I've got a box-load of DivX flicks. Never watch any of them, though. ;)
