What is the latest codec and what media viewer do you think is the best at the moment?

its probably something about how it is bloated like hell. Its not a media player anymore, its a web browser do everything that pushes microsoft's crap down your throat program.

6.4 was awesome.

piku,

Exactly! I mean, that's one of the main reasons I hate hate HATE Real Player. It forces all those channels or whatever they're called on you. It's just a whole bunch of garbage IMO. Even the simple mode or whatever it's called isn't good IMO. Also, the hotkey assignments SUCK. Isn't it like <CTRL>+P to Play/Pause and <CTRL>+S to Stop it in 7beta? Let me keep my Spacebar and Period buttons man! :) And if I remember correctly, you can't adjust the volume by simply pressing the up or down arrow in 7beta either. They've just changed a good, clean interface into a clumsy, bloated pile of junk... almost similar to what they did with CuteFTP (I think). But I still use that at least, cuz I'm so used to it. Just REALLY hate the <SHIFT>+F4 instead of <CTRL>+C for Quick Connect :( Cheers!

yeah.....it's a huge window with all that crappy web-stuff, and all kinds of ads for MS and their affiliates.

and it's so true.....Realplayer is like this and it STINKS!

7 is ugly, fat, slow, and doesn't play when I hit space. 6.4 is the best MS Media Player easily. If you want the playlist get a copy of PowerDVD, which will play anything that media player can (including DivX).

Took my Celeron 450 ten hours to compress a 4GB movie down to 550MB. I used FlaskMPEG, which is supposed to be the fastest encoding utility right now. Analogous to file compression, I imagine it takes longer when using high compression/low bitrates such as that I used (i.e. ensuring the final AVI will fit onto a single CD-R). Also, I've read that Pentium processors are faster due to the additional on-die cache, but never seen any numbers or anecdotal evidence. I'm more inclined to think it has to do with FPU performance...this would explain the difference between you guys' Celeron 500 and PIII 750, in additional to the obvious discrepancy in raw clock speed.

We had a pretty good discussion going a few weeks ago...http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=177468

Best regards,
Floyd

Thanks guys
I looked at Media Player 7, and hated it.
6.4 for me

Also the 3.11 codec looks alot better than 3.1

I had a celeron 550, and it only took 6-8 hours to do a complete encoding of a DVD into DivX, including the audio. I wanna try with my new P3 882 now...

Mediaplayer 6 used to suck balls too. But they fixed all the bugs and stuff.

I don't like 7 beta too. Its not as stable as 6.4.

Plus, 6.4 is way easier to use (the space bar thing some of you mentioned). I mean... isn't it annoying when you watch a porn and you have to use 2 keys to... nevermind ;) :p

SSP - LOL

Rza - I only got Being John Malcovich so far :( When I install Win2k I might get enough initiative to rip some of my DVD's though :)
