I want to go on a diet. I want to lose about 20 lbs. I know the Atkins diet works, but once you stop, you gain the weight back. I had a couple of friends that this happened to. Yes, I will be working out in conjunction with dieting. Any advice? Or are there better alternatives?

they both suck.

do a real diet, which is actually a complete lifestyle change ... not just a "phase" diet. they dont work ... ever ... cause once you are off of them, you gain the crap back.

the best is a balanced diet with healthy meats, fruits, vegetables and carbs. if you want to lose 20 lbs for real go out and exercise and cut the total calories in your diet.

I hear the diet where you burn more calories than you consume works well

Atkins works quicker, but is more strict (harder). South Beach is slower, but is easier. With both, it is important to not go back to old habbits.

My mom and other folks i have talked with had great success with a plan called Body For Life.
Check it out on amazon or Borders, etc.
It is a very good eating plan, exercise plan that works and is healthy to do

they're both the same during phase 1 I believe. Atkins just doesn't tell you to watch your fat intake. ie you can eat eggs and bacon all you want where as South Beach you'd be eating hard boiled eggs. South beach is probably a lot healthier for this reason.

Oh the first time I did south beach I lost 15 pounds (220 to 205) and now I'm 205-210 depending, and I did it 3 years ago for a month.

If you actually read the South Beach book you learn a lot about eating right (how carbs affect you etc).

Real weight loss is about 90% diet, 10% exercise.

thats not true. i lost 10 pounds(now weigh 150, 6' tall) doing nothing but running a lot more then i usually do

At 6' and 150 you are a flipping twig and probably at a calorie deficiet in the first place. Put on some weight skeletor. I'm 6' and 168 and most people call me scrawny.

For your typical person that is 20, 30, 40, 50 pounds overweight, it's simply a matter of diet. A typical person in that situation will benefit far more from calorie reduction and proper diet than they will 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 days a week.

yah i have to agree with vi_edit ... 6 feet tall @ 150lbs is freaking tiny. I am 5'11 and I was 155lbs when I was ripped at one point, but at the same time I was freaking skinny as balls.

now i'm 5'11 and 190lbs, but not fat at all, just built.

EXACTLY!

Most people think they can just go on a diet and think that they will be set for life. Very wrong. The process of losing weight, and maintaining a certain weight is a lifestyle. Gradual loss of weight is better than one big diet. Shifting into it gradually will make it easier to continue for the rest of your life.
