Hmm... The price gets even lower, this time, to $508.99. But it's still nowhere near the $400 mark.

How are you getting free tax and shipping? My shipping is $79 and tax is $31.

Oh my people.....it's dell.com here not FVCKING rocket science. The reason your shipping is coming to $79 is because you are choosing to have it shipped next day air (actually Dell is probably deciding that for you)change your shipping option to ground ship 3-5 days, that does not cost you anything for that......and where I am, I do not get charged any tax.....I don't think all states do get charged but maybe yours does which then makes it $430 dollars with a 15" LCD without the monitor it's about $325 or so. I have seen better deals on Dell before if you keep an eye out for their coupons and you can get a bunch and stack 'em

Okay, okay. I stand corrected.

It's still over-budget, though. $425.05. And you don't get speakers or even a modem.

I still get $399 but hey I guess I am lucky and don't get charged tax. I think if you read the original post the machine is being used in an office, so I don't think the need for speakers would really be necesary, and I just plain feel bad if they need to have a telephone modem.

Stay away from E-machines.

I might be biased, but I wouldn't buy from them. The old addage of "you get what you pay for" is pretty true. I'd rather buy a type-writer and a 4 function calculator.

Well FVCK me, you're right! :)

$399 with a 15" analog and $448 with a 17" analog. That's a tough deal to beat. And it's not like it's really breaking the budget. It just depends if you're in a state with sales tax that also has a Dell store.

Suckers wanna charge you an extra $20 just to get an optical mouse, but other than that, not bad. I think less than a year ago, Dell was still only giving 128MB with their cheap systems, but 256MB will at least work with Office XP. It doesn't have a CD-R, but I suppose that type of person isn't going to deal with many things too big to email. It doesn't have a printer.

I would really consider getting the 2-year on-site for another $49.

Thank god someone with brains......people need to realize it's not an awesome machine here...and if you really want i'm sure you can put together something cheaper, but do you really want to take the time, plus everyone forgets the cost of the OS, and most business' want you using that especially small business. I think for most people this is a very good deal, with very little hassle involved, and I would definately go with the 2 year onsite if it was me. I thought this would be a good recomendation for what the original poster here was looking for....

Dell 2400 is 845GV chipset while Dell 3000 is 865GV.

For non-gaming web-surfing, word processing, excel, etc. is there any difference?

Also, what's the difference between the regular celeron and celeron D (if rated at the same speed, would a non-gamer notice a difference? Or does the Celeron D just overclock better in a non-Dell system?)

LOL.
I have several gaming rigs, and I surf the Internet on an Emachine T2862.
Works fine for what its for. Came with monitor speakers etc. Quiet and mid case.
I bought mine for $350 No rebates. Works fine, Celeron D.

The default is a CD-ROM, but they have one of those "free upgrade" deals where you can choose from a CD-RW or DVD-ROM drive. And it's the same price, $399 + tax, if applicable.

I have to admit, this wows me. I had written off Dell as more expensive than HP/Compaq, but I guess it turns out there are some situations where Dell sprints ahead.

That "old addage" is not true at all. eMachines are just fine. Maybe not Apple or IBM grade, but on the level with Dell and HP/Compaq.

if you wait for a good deal, you can definately get a celeron D. My friend got a emachines 2.66 celeron D with 512ram and 60gig hard drive from bestbuy last thanksgiving for $160, i think it was. Then he bought a 17in lcd for $150 or so. That puts you only at $310. Of course, not every day is thanksgiving but i would think that prices have gone down in half a year enough to be able to get a celly D under 400

Best Buy doesn't sell PCs for less than $400 or so. Their LCDs start at about $200. You must be mistaken.

After Thanksgiving is Black Friday, where everything is on sale, so rebates and sales probably got the prices you see up there.

I've owned several Dells in the past and never had any problems. Do you guys think that standard 90 day warranty is enough?

Also, any problems with that FP153 LCD screen? How is it's picture quality?

Not noticing some random deal buried within the Dell website is bad luck, not dumb. I was simply in a rush to respond, out of concern that somebody might take your ridiculous advice.

No, what's "dumb" is recommending a $400 Celeron system from Dell.

I bought a E-machines T3101 socket 754 90nm Sempron 3100+ last week for $400-150MIR = $250 no monitor at CC...

Very pleased. I think it could use a little more RAM. Only 192megs after the Bideo robs 64megs.
