Best Defrag Utilities

Well I have always considered Diskeeper the best for defragmentation, but I have not looked at their utility for many years and have not been keeping up with this area of software.

What's the word these days, who's the best?

Besides regular disk defrag, PageDefrag, looks really interesting, doing page file and registry
defrags:

Hey I use the same one. 😛 I've been using Diskeeper since v7 and have never had a problem with it.

If you purchase Diskeeper ver. 9 and then update it, you receive patch 158 which essentially gives you Diskeeper ver. 10 for free.

I purchased ver. 9 for $14.00 from DirectDeals.com at Christmas.

I'm using Diskeeper 10 Professional Premier, it won't run at startup, so I must have one of the services turned off it needs to start. I can go to the service under Computer Management and click on it to start and it will, so I know it works, just, like I said I have a service off I know I don't need to have running but this thing wants it.

The only thing right now is, for the first time I'm a bit scared to use anything other then Windows defrag, because this is on my SLI gaming box and I have the Raptor 150 on it, this box is not cheap and I don't want to have some app like this messing it up.

Should I be worried? I have never had a problem with Diskeeper in the past and they seem like they have always had a goof reputation.

THANKS

I use Norton's Speed Disk which is included with Norton Systemworks Premiere (Ghost, AV and more).
It does an adequate job for me and my students, and I got it delivered at $45 from eBay.

The Windows 2K/XP (not sure but I assume 2K3 as well) defrag is a modified version of Diskeeper Lite. 🙂

The only service for Diskeeper is titled "Diskeeper" in msconfig and you should leave it enabled. There is no tray icon. Mine shows to be using 33MB, but since I have 2GB I am not worried. It should be set to automatic if you look under computer mgmt. > services

I'm not talking about the Diskeeper service, yes I see it and it's enabled, BUT it needs one of the Windows services to start. If I go into the "Computer Management" and click on Diskeeper in the left side of the window pane it will not start.

I have to go into the "Services" and click "Start" for it to run, because somewhere I read, this is because one of the serivces it needs to run is not enabled.

Now yes I have some services shut off that don't effect anything, because I'm just a Home user and the box runs fine, but Diskeeper seems to want something that typically a Home user doesn't need to start.

Obviously at least one shut off service effects something...

I've run Diskeeper for years with never a single problem so I don't think you need to be worried. Either run it or don't, it doesn't matter to me, I run it on some boxes, and not on others. I guess you could enable one service at a time to find out which is causing Diskeeper to not run, or you can just leave things alone.

Yes of course I can run one service at a time and reboot till I'm blue in the face and kill my poor box, LOL.

Well was hoping someone said THIS is the service and just be done with it. 😉

ALOHA

In my opinion the Windows XP built-in defreaager is just fine.

Also in my opinion and experience, the absolute best defregger available is voptXP from Golden Bow Software (but it isn't free).

Thanks guys for the input so far. I have Diskeeper 10 Professional Premier installed and for the MFT settings, I clicked on, "Configure the MFT on this volume to the recommended size"

Was that a bad choice?

Funny thing the C: drive still seems to show the amount it made it, but the D: drive isn't and is making a recommendation for it, when I did it already.

THANKS

P.S. scott, if you know the people that make voptXP, you should seriously tell them to make a professional site.

I would never buy anything from a company with a site that looks that bad, because if you can make decent software, tben you can make a decent site and should understand that your site is your company image.

DasFox,

Nope, I don't know them or have any connection with them.

Their site asthethics seem o.k. to my less-discerning eye.

Suggest you take their 30 day free trial.

The voptXP packs tight, instead of loose like the Win XP defragger.

I like its GLOBAL defrag option, which defrags all my drives with just one click.

I also like its very fast speed, and it options for cleaning various caches, although CCleaner is doing that job for me now.

Finally, I like its small size.

Unfortunately, I don't like its high price. But suggest you try their free 30-day. That'll give you another benchmark vs diskeeper & the other brands that I think you'll find impressive.

I think I tried diskkeeper once...if that's the one that turns on at its own discretion in the background. I tried one like that back on Windows 98 & hated it.

Hey I use the same one. I've been using Diskeeper since v7 and have never had a problem with it.

I have been using Diskeeper 8 for a few years now, never had any problems with it.

DasFox --
EVENT LOG must be enabled at startup for Diskeeper to work.
Go to msconfig, click on Services, find Event Log in the list and select
it with a checkmark, and restart.

This service will not slow your machine at all.

As stated above, Diskeeper Lite is the same program as the default Windows defrag.
Microsoft purchased it from Executive Software to include in the Windows distribution.
It's an excellent program, but you need Event Log enabled.

i use the windows one for quick ones and also use System Mechanic Pro's defrag utility which also does registry and system files as well as an optimized defrag. i also use TuneXP to reorder my boot files for quicker startups.

If you like the Windows Defragment program, you'll love Diskeeper 10 Professional Premier. The Windows version is essentially a stripped down Diskeeper, seriously.

Since everyone and their cat is on the Diskeeper bandwagon I am compelled to point out that O&O Defrag Pro is also excellent and indeed it's interface remains superior. Diskeeper 10's improved (over 9) but is still a work in progress.

'ginny-wise, Defrag can handle everything (particularly MFT and registry) from Windows except the pagefile while Diskeeper must do the pre-boot dance for the MFT as well. Conversely, Defrag apparently cannot expand the MFT while Diskeeper can. Defrag offers five (count them: five!) defrag types which are not limited by manual or schedule whereras Diskeeper offers only three (disregarding the supplementary-only I-FAAST), one of which is for schedules only.

So, while Defrag of course offers scheduling, I submit that it is prolly better for those who prefer the manual approach with full control while Diskeeper is better for those who prefer the automatic approach (which is certainly better for corporate use but not necessarily for the enthusiast). One niggle with Defrag is the splash screen, which I loathe in general. If you want a chuckle open Diskeeper's FAQ: "Why doesn't Diskeeper move all of the files into one place on the volume?"

Raxo PerfectDisc is crap and it is almost a given that Speedisk must be since it is from Symantec (though I have not tried since ye olde timey days). I'd rather use freebees or stick to Windows' Diskeeper "lite".
