I like that people are mentioning Divinity: Dragon Knight Saga. That's a good one, though feels a bit dated today looks-wise, even though it isn't all that old. Still, very solid action-oriented RPG.
If you are coming from shooters, then the easiest route would be something like Borderlands as mentioned--I'd suggest Borderlands 2 because it has an engaging story and still looks and plays great today. It's action with some light RPG elements (Skill system and builds).
Something like Mass Effect is more RPG-leaning, but combat is heavily action-oriented. I think that is also a great transition. ME2 is OK, but less RPG than the first, and while the story was captivating, it felt to me like the entire game was a prologue.
I think the best "classic style" RPG out there today, are the Dragon Age games, or Skyrim--and they are very different. DA:O or DA:I are incredibly solid games with great stories, great team set up, and choice-based game progression. Pretty solid itemization, too (though for DA:O, I think you need all the DLC to get a nice complement of gear choices).
Skyrim is the single player, god-type RPG, and is completely open. You go find the stories, and see what happens. IMO, there is no more immersive game--that makes you feel like part of that world--than Skyrim. The main story isn't that great, but it is designed around 100s of different independent, or loosely-related storylines that you cna complete or ignore, whatever you want--including the main story, really. Though that acts as a loose guide to introduce you to different parts of that world--even though you are always free to explore wherever you want, whenever you want.
Fallout 3 and Fallout NV are the same model as Skyrim (same company, well...mostly), just post-apocalyptic, and guns. So that might be mroe to your liking. Both are amazing.
The Witcher games are also very good....though I can never get into them, as much as I try. They are gorgeous, great story, great characters, I don't mind the combat as much as some do....but I dunno, I just get bored with them quickly. The first two are completely on rails, so there is no free exploration--which I pretty much require of an RPG. I think a lot of people that love those, love them because they are "mature" ...which seems to be defined as: tits, foul language, and gore. That's pretty much the opposite of mature, imo, not that I don't mind it--I just don't find the interpretation of adult themes and maturity as it is often applied to the Witcher, to be very fitting.
Still, I find it hard to criticize those games honestly. I do think they are awesome; I just never could get into them.
