I am more of a AMD Fan, but right now my friend happen to be one of those who does listen to those who are smart. Anyway, he doesnt have a current AGP Slot. So, without further ado, what right now is the best reliabilty/perfoming pentium 4 mobo? He wont be doing any overclocking.

A good board that will not break the bank is the ECS 8X L4S8A2 and goes for $82 at newegg.com

It has sound, ethernet, firewire, and USB 2.0. It uses the SiS648 chipset.

845PE based boards are generally considered best at this time. Plenty to choose from depending on what features you want. Asus, Epox, Intel, Abit, Albatron all have nice models. If he isn't overclocking, Intel brand mobos are as solid as they come.

I personally really like my Abit IT7 Max 2 rev 2.....a bit pricey but alot of great features and very stable so far after a month of use

2 Primary IDE connectors
HPT 374 allows for add'n 8 IDE devices via with the use of serial ata connection...Abit even included one serial ata:parallel adapter
Firewire
10 usb ports
Onboard NIC and sound

Very nice layout..the floppy connector is up higher on the mobo and avoids so congestive cabling

Has legacy mouse and keyboard ports...no serial or parallel ports
Only bad thing is 4 pci expansion slots not 5 or 6
