The dog would be a better deterrent.

The shotgun would be a better incapacitator.

FTFW

i concur.

nothing like a vicious barking German Shepard to scare the ****** out of would-be burglars.
We have several little , yappy dogs (Cairn Terrier, Jack Chihuhahaha and a Peke), as sentries and a Rhodesian for muscle, that keep the Mothership secure from terrestrial intruders.

It's also said that Geese make for good watch animals.

I have personally seen what the sound of jackin' a round does to someone who thinks they are being slick.
but then... to paraphrase "when everyone in the room must die :Q

Or an 870 with a Scorpion

If they are unarmed shooting them is attempted murder and you should go to jail, even if it is 1 am.

Please quit posting in this thread, you really have no clue what you're talking about.

Why because I think it should be illegal to shoot unarmed people. It is NEVER ok to shoot an unarmed person, regardless iof they are breaking into your home.

Never is a word one should NEVER use when describing a situation like that.

Being a cop i thought you would understand the dangers of shooting an unarmed person.

And how is it that you know for 100% fact that they are unarmed?

If you don't see a gun always assume they are unarmed.

I've got a MUCH better idea... when somone breaks into your house in the middle of the night, YOU assume they are unarmed!
I'll read about how your choice works out for you in the newspaper.

As for the original question .. my 90lb dog is the only deterrent ... my Mossberg 12 guage
is for if the burglar isn't deterred!

whats the point in having a gun, if you'd get put in jail if you actually shot the person who was breaking in?

I mean you cant just shoot someone for stealing stuff, unless they have a gun pointed at you as well.

If someone breaks into a house, who's to say they're unarmed and just want your TV...or are armed and want to rape your daughter? Can't tell until it happens..I'd rather not take the risk. If they break into the house, they obviously do not have good intentions.

I would go with the dog... because they'll at least see and hear it, and run away. But they won't know that you have the shotgun until they're in your house and you're able to get it out in time.

But can't you get both? Shotguns aren't very expensive. I hope you'll consider the dog more than just security though.

Agreed. If someone is breaking into my home while my family is sleeping in their rooms, I will, without hesitation, shoot the person. Multiple times even, just to be sure. I'm not going to wait until I see a gun; by that time, it may be too late. And the (possible) consequences of jail is much easier to bear than the (possible) consequences of having my family attacked.

In my view, once someone intentionally performs a violent crime (such as breaking into my house), he has lost ALL rights. I don't feel bad if unarmed criminals are shot, shot in the back or tortured before being shot in the back.

50 cal shotgun. Screw buckshot, get slugs.

Full grown boxer. Those things look so evil and can knock you out.

A 50 Cal shotgun isn't needed. A 7mm pistol is more than enough for self defense.

Glock 17L, custom refited to be fully auto (basically an Uzi)

Nope, its a deterent cause he will runs his ass right back out the door when he hears you runningdown the steps and cocking said shot gun at the same time.

yeah, I know. It seems I just turn around from blasting some liberal for having an unrealistic fantasy-land idea of the world, and a conservative pops up with a "the whole world is scum and everyone deserves DEATH" mentality. Are there ANY reasonable moderates on this forum? Maybe they're just real quiet...

many robbers/thieves are not armed though, and I dont see how threatening them with a gun will cause them to give back your wallet/watch before running away.

I agree I think they have lost all their rights too, and if it were up to me to make the laws, I'd say if they break into your home you have a right to shoot them in certain circumstances even if they didnt have a gun. But they laws arent up to me unfortunately.

What I'm concerned about is, couldnt you end up in prison for a very long time, possibly life if you shot someone who broke into your home?
