Whether this is sarcasm or not, I've had the Citi platnium select student for 6 months with a 2200 limit and nowhere on it does it say student.

It was sarcasm. He was mocking SouthPaW1227 with that post.

I don't understand you guys. If you can control your spending, why not have a $5,000 limit for later on? Trust me, every time you "request a limit increase", that crap goes down on you record. And it takes A LOT of requests to get it up to anything substantial.

No it doesn't. I've asked for one increase on my Total Merill and it stands at 16,800 for the limit. My Amex Hilton HHonors is at 17k (initial CL), my Lockheed Federal is at 10k, my Skymiles is at 5k, my Starwood is at 10k, I can't even remember an increase as small as 200-300 dollars. I'd charge up to the limit every month and then pay in full.

There's nothing "wrong" w/ a student card, but why not just get the real deal w/ a real limit. If you don't use it now, fine. If you need it, it's there.

Then why did you say there was? I still keep a hold of my Amex Student Blue because of its account history age, and the fact that it was a damn good card for the time. Most Student Cards are way more attractive than regular sh!t cars from Household, Orchard, Providian, etc.

Bottom line is if you can't control spending, don't get a CC anyway, just use cash. If you get a CC, get one w/ good benefits and gives you a healthy limit from the start so you're not requesting increases of $200 here and $300 there.

What do limits matter? If you are interested in controlling spending use an American Express Charge Card. Then you've no choice in the matter and of course the benefits are great. I think stated limits are a waste of time unless you do a good bit of time critical or business purchases. Lord knows my work still owes me several K right now for expenses, but of course I put them on a limit based card because I know how much I can charge before I'm denied.
