Best CPU/Value for overclocking: Duron 850 or T-Bird 800?

NFS4

No Lifer
Well, my money is ready. I've already gotten a 256MB stick of Crucial CAS2 PC133 and I've got a new case. My other components will be carried over. I think I've settled on the Abit KT7A-RAID as my mobo choice (my last 2 have been Abit boards so I'll stick with them).

It now comes down to processor choice. I'm looking to spend ~$100 and the T-Bird 800 and Duron 850 are both $98. I've settled on this price bracket so that I an upgrade to Palomino down the road. So here are my questions:

1) Which do you think is the best overclocker?
2) Has NE1 used the 133/266 bus with either chip?
3) Will either hit 1GHz+ with conventional cooling?
4) Can you recommend a good, relatively inexpensive Socket-A cooler?...no Thermaltake Orbs please😉
5) Should I get the Duron 800 for $73?:Q😉

If you are going to get a Duron get the 800. From what I've heard the Duron OCs better. I only can get my Duron to 935, yea, I suck.

I would go for the Tbird though.

The TBird is faster, and you probably will have close to the same OCing success with it, so you may want to go with that. I would guess that you could get either of those CPUs to 1-1.1GHz with conventional cooling. Would the FOP32+ be considered conventional? I hear it's pretty good.

The cheapest way would be to get the Duron 800 and OC to 1000MHz, and higher if you can, but if you want the fastest speed go with the TBird, after all, it's hardly more expensive at all.

It's up to you, I don't think there will be a massive difference though.

Well, the T-Bird sounds good...but that $73 Duron 800 is calling my name😉

So screw the Duron 850...it's either gonna be a Duron 800 or spend $35 more on a T-Bird 800.

Again, this is just a placeholder system 'til the Palomino gets here.

What's wrong with your current computer? Why do you feel the need to upgrade if it's just a placeholder system? Why not just wait for this palomino?

I'm looking to get 1GHz+ Also, my Athlon 735 isn't pushing my GF2 hard enough. Lastly, my dad is taking this system so I need another.

<< FYI Thunderbird and Duron 750s are known for overclocking better than thei r800 and 850 MHz brothers. >>

How so? Aren't they basically the same chips with different multipliers (which can be unlocked)?

WHAT IS UP WITH THESE SHADY ONLINE DEALERS?? I went to use the Anandtech CPU Price Guide. Fair enough. I get to the site and the prices are nothing like advertised. Some of them don't even have the processors listed on their site. Case in point, Upgrade Planet says that they have a Duron 800 for $73. I get to their site and they don't even have a listing for Duron processors; just K6-2 and K7's. Other sites say $11 shipping, then you get to the site and they say $15. ARGHH:|:| I haven't found ONE site that sticks to their advertised pricing and shipping details.

I'm going to get a Retail one from Buy.com I guess. At least I can use the $10 or $30 coupons. Better yet, shipping is ony $5 for a Duron. And I'm covered by a 3-year warranty. It would come to $98 incl shipping for the Duron 800 if I use the $10 coupon, but I wouldn't have to deal with these crappy online dealers that try to fool their customers.

Maybe I'll shop around for some other stuff and get $150 worth of stuff so that I can use the $30 coupon.

Here's another question(it kinda fits 😛):
Which is a better bang for the buck, a 1Ghz Tbird at $175, or a 1.2Ghz Tbird at $265?

I just hate dealing with shady retailers. I went to a local computer show this weekend and about 50% of the sellers were trying to rip people off by selling old stuff or charging too much.

On my last upgrade I went through the For Sale forum and found a chip that was already tested to run at the speed I was wanting; 700e@933@1.75v

You might want to talk to Compuwiz and see what he has cooking.
Link and Good luck.

NFS4:

FYI, overclocking voids the warranty. And the retail HS/F isn't too much good for oc'ing either.

<< This limited warranty does not cover damages due to external causes, including improper use, problems with electrical power, accident, neglect, alteration, repair, improper installation, or improper testing. >>

The two terms here that would apply are improper use(overclocking) and alteration(pencil trick), possibly even electrical power if you have to adjust the voltage.

Of course, I've been around long enough to know that😉

But...I did get a year-old Celeron 300A that had been overclocked to 450MHz for a year replaced under waranty by Intel.

It looks like Compuwiz is all out of the faster Durons...

Does anyone know of a reputable site where I can get a Duron 800 for ~$75 w/o eye-gouging shipping charges?

Man it was sweet

What happened to it?:Q
