Best cpu for socket 478 ?

he has 300 total budget so spending 100-150 on a cpu would be ideal

i noticed that newegg mentions yonah cores as not having 64-bit support ?
is there a 64-bit option for socket478 ?
also what is the deal with these dothan cores, do they support HT ?
anything better than just getting a 3.0e for bout 100 bucks ?

thanks

Yonah, Dothan, and Banias will not work on a desktop Socket 478 board. While Newegg lists them all as Socket 478, the usual notation is Socket 479. They don't use the same pin layout as Socket 478 chips, and in fact don't all use the same pin layout as each other.

So your options are Pentium 4s and Celerons (and Celeron Ds). Pentium 4s on Socket 478 top out at 3.4 GHz.

There are no Socket 478 chips with AMD64/EM64T/x86-64/x64/whatever. Dothan does not support Hyper-Threading.

even so i'm run a socket 479 p4m in my desktop 478 boards before, i wouldn't think that alone would limit the support

hmmm i guess your site lists what i ran as a Intel Pentium 4-M Northwood 478 Y Y Y N [14] Y Y N N N N N N N N

Anyways i think my friend is seeing the light
he is upgrading from a 433 celeron and is now considering getting rid of the 478 board in favor of am2 or 775

Probly a good dea to also tell your friend to wait til the end of the month. AMD's price cuts and Intel's Conroe 🙂

it turns out he had more than just a motherboard

it was an sis651 motherboard with single channel pc2100 and a P4 celeron 2.4
and he was angry at the speed he was getting

sounds to me like his performance is getting killed from 2 sides
not only is his cache 256KB but he is only getting around 2GB/s mem bandwidth

not sure if recommending him to get a 3.0e for 100 bucks with such a slow motherboard/mem would be worth it
i told him to just sell it on ebay and get a new system
