I want to upgrade from an Intel i5 4570 to something better but I don't want to have to buy a new motherboard to fit it. I'm looking into the 4790k but I don't know if it will be worth the price, unless I wait for Cyber Monday or Black Friday.

This is the motherboard I have currently
Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. H81M-DS2V (SOCKET 0)

Forgot to mention this is the i5 4570S not the regular version.

Save your money, you won't see enough improvement to to be worth upgrading the CPU.

Sad to say, that's not much of an OCing mobo. With F6 BIOS, it will take on of my G3258 CPUs to 4.0Ghz, but not higher. I imagine that a 4790K would be too much for the power delivery on that board, not to mention, you really need a "Z" board to get the most out of a "K" quad-core.

My opinion? Don't even bother. The step up, wouldn't be worth the price paid (unless free), because the overclocking would be so limited. In fact, it might even be unstable, or throttled.

Hmm, alright. So say if I was going to upgrade my motherboard to a socket 1151, what would my options be? I'm not sure I would even have the best amount of money but I'm willing to take whatever I can get.

How about the i5 6600k? Is that good for an upgrade? It's around 200 so if it's better that seems like a perfect choice for me.

I would only upgrade to a "K" Skylake, if you are prepared to go "all in". Meaning, a Z170 board, and high-speed (DDR4-3000 or better) RAM. You really need fast RAM for SKL to be able to stretch it's legs, and you need a "Z" board for that platform to allow for memory overclocking / XMP support.

You still wouldn't see enough much improvement. Get an larger SSD or a new GPU instead.

if you plan upgrading the cpu better sell the motherboard and cpu and get either a 4790k/4770k and a z97/z87 motherboard(used or new) or an i5 6400 or i7 6700 and a z170 motherboard(with ddr4)

Still wouldn't be worth the trouble. The OP will be better off waiting to see how Kaby Lake and Zen performs.

Well I could sell my old r9 280x on ebay and get around $100-150 for that, could cover the cost of the motherboard plus CPU

Plus i'm not planning on overclocking so I could just settle for a non k 6700 anyway

I'm not sure if you would even notice the performance difference, moving from a locked Haswell quad-core, to another locked Skylake quad-core.

What does the 6700k have over the regular 6700? I'm curious, all I know is that the k means it can be overclocked

Well looking back it is just a 10 dollar increase in price with a .6 GHz increase in clock speed so I guess it's well worth getting a 6700k then. Now that that's settled, I must go and find a good and cheap motherboard for it

Just remember, you need a "Z" chipset board, to be able to use DDR4 RAM faster than stock 2133 speed. And Skylake loves fast RAM.

Oh darnit I forgot to mention this was the i5 4570S version, not the regular 4570 if there ever was one. Sorry for the confusion.

You will still be better off waiting for the reviews of Kaby Lake and Zen after they are released in January. If it was simply a matter of swapping CPUs then it might be worth it. But if you have to replace the motherboard and memory as well, then you are better off waiting.

I'm not replacing the memory, plus I need to clean the case out anyway, it's been getting dusty. But I guess you're right about me waiting until the new intel processors come out, it's only 2 months away anyway. Ahhh this is all killing me lol whatever, i'll just wait it out. Probably invest in the stock market or something in the meantime.

Yes, you would be. Haswell uses DDR3, Skylake boards use DDR4. Well, all except the really gimped ones that work with DDR3L. L being low-voltage. Which your current DDR3 probably isn't.

Stop being so cheap, save up some money, and do things right for once.

Btw, your 4570S is a special low-TDP, lower-performance version of that chip. Let me guess, you saw it "cheap".

At least when I buy cheap, I know what I'm getting into. (Well, for the most part. Poor HDD shipping practices from China sellers excepted, I guess. :p )

Darn, they don't support ddr3? well I guess I need to save up for a little bit longer then.

Also no, i'm new to intel, I haven't had Intel until a couple months ago

Kaby lake is skylake.

get an i7 6700 either way if you get a z170 motherboard allows non K overclocking you can overclock the cpu via BCLK(and some B150/H170 Asrock Hyper OC motherboard)

microcenter has the 6700 cheaper

another option for overclokcing with 4core HT
