I'd wager they're all pioneers, as most (all?) rebadges are, but how to tell 104 vs. 105?

just returned from Fry's in Arlington with a 105 unit. there was an open box with the same 105 number and the face matched up perfectly the the pioneer AO5 right next to it (priced at $349 :Q). looks like there's at least 6 more left...

I was reading the markings on the outside of the box trying to determine which drive was inside. Could you post the serial number of your drive, omitting the last 2 digits, please? I want a 4x burner at a 2x price.

there was nothing on the outside of the box to indicate which drive was inside - mine definately said 2x on the ouside. on the drive itself it says DVR-105 Pioneer Corporation...

I've seen the boxes on the shelf. I'm hoping that the higher serial numbers are the DVR-105s and if someone could share their serial number (without the last 2 digits for privacy is fine) it would help.

Yup, they're DVR-105's. Pounce on this like a lion on a gazelle. My serial # ended in 816WL. The serial is on the outside of the box. I just grabbed mine from the Fry's in San Diego today.

Has anyone gotten a 2x, what is the serial (minus last two digits) ? Also, anyone know Fry's return policy? Could you buy it, open it, see if it's 4X, then immediately return if it's 2x?

I had a Pioneer A03 which worked for over a year and recently died. It was a very reliable recorder until the day it died (which may have been related to the hacked firmware I flashed it with to allow 2x on generic media;-). I went and got a Cendyne 105 which is the same as a Pioneer A05...and the same as this drive being discussed. I was very disappointed that it would not even recognize some of my cheap media (Princos, etc) that my A03 worked perfectly with. So the 105 went back and I'm looking at the Sony 500 now...

Fry's return policy is very forgiving. It's usually pretty easy to return anything there as long as you have all the original stuff.

This deal's tempting but it's too far to drive to the wilsonville for me.

The purpose of showing the serial number minus the last 2 digits is to let people know which series is potentially the DVR-105 drive. Showing the last 2 digits and 2 letters is pointless.

I just got back from Fry's and there are 2 series of serial numbers on those Best Cost drives: BLDL107xxxWL and BLDL114xxxWL. I got a drive with a serial number like BLDL1147xxWL. It is a Pioneer DVR-105, clearly printed on the drive label, manufacture date December 2002. I'd recommend getting a BLDL114xxxWL drive for a better chance of buying the 4X burner in the 2X box.

While at Fry's, I also saw they had the Hawking 11Mbps wireless access point kit NK330W with a wireless PC Card kit for $69.90. http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/nk330w.htm

PXC, I have to admit your post scared the bajeezus out of me, as I purchased a BLDL107xxxWL, but I mustered up anough courage to open it up, and it WAS a 105. So far, I'm thinking that it is ONLY 105's, has ANYONE purchased one that happens to be a 104? By the way, I got it at the Manhattan beach store, they said there was 20, but I got 1 of the last 2 I could find (if you go there, it was on the ground near some other drives in the burners section). So to recap BLDL107xxxWL can or does mean 105. Has anyone gotten a 104 yet?

I thought the original poster got one of the DVR-104. It just made sense that the higher serial number ones had a better chance of being DVR-105s than the lower number ones. But if all the drives are 105s, awesome deal.

I just picked up mine from the Fountain Valley Fry's Electronics. The rebate says it's only good through 1/14, so today's the last day.

There were still about 5 left on the shelves around noon, though I picked up the last one with the serial number BLDL114xxxWL, and it is definately a Pioneer DVR-105 drive. The rest are BLDL107xxxWL drives. I have no idea if they are 104s or 105s.

BTW, the rebate form says it's good for Fry's Electronics or Outpost.com. I didn't see any of these over there, though. Still, YMMV.
